''An Air Asia flight from the Indonesia city of Surabaya to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic control, reports say.
Indonesian media say 162 people were on board.
The aircraft, flight number QZ8501, lost contact with Jakarta air traffic control just after 06:15am local time, a transport official told local media.
The official, Hadi Mustofa, said the plane had asked for an unusual route before losing contact.''

Reports of a plane crash in the ocean off the east coast of Belitung which - from my uninformed quick check on google maps - would appear to be in the middle of the flight path....

In an area renowned throughout the industry for throwing caution to the wind safety wise, Malaysia has ,until this year, had a very good safety record.
The area is prone to bad weather and I am sure that this will have played a part in this planes disappearance.
It is pure conjecture, but I would not be surprised at all to see weather playing a part of this incident.
Ice in the pitot tubes + an inexperienced or arrogant crew often spells disaster. |

KUALA LUMPUR: An aircraft has reportedly crashed off the east coast of Sumatera, in the waters of East Belitung.
This report came after authorities confirmed that AirAsia Flight QZ8501 went missing earlier today.
An Indonesian news portal Bangka Pos had quoted an official from H.A.S Hanandjoeddin Tanjungpandan Airport in Indonesia, Suparno, said the exact location of the crash site has not been identified.
The portal also reported that the Indonesian national search and rescue agency (Basarnas) team from Bangka Belitung were heading to East Belitung waters. |

That's pretty normal if there is bad weather about.
Weather for flying in that area is rarely great.
Coupled with that, many operators in the area have poor maintenance records.
Pretty much the entire civil aviation fleets of some countries are on the EU 'no fly' list, barring them flying into European airspace. Indonesia and The Philippines are on that list.
Air Asia is not.
Pilot training and pilot salaries are poor by the standards of many legacy carriers and a lot of pilots 'earn their wings' in this region, especially after the growth of low cost carriers has led to a growth in the need for pilots.

Very true. This crash is awful and I am saddened by it. But it's also sad how many are dying in places like Syria on a daily basis and we barely bother to read about it now. |

CB clouds on the area up to 55,000 feet. That is higher than the ceiling height for any airliner.
So they weren't going over if. If the clouds were widespread, the only to go is through it.
The crew had 8,000 flight hours between them. That's not a lot for many commercial flyers.
Weather and poor crew decisions I am guessing.
The plane was registered in Indonesia,not Malaysia, as earlier reports had suggested.
Air Asia is a Malaysian business but has various subsidiary companies such as Air Asia Thailand, Air Asia X, Air Asia Philippines and Air Asia India.
The plane that went down belonged to Air Asia Indonesia. It is one of about only 5 Indonesian airlines NOT barred from flying within the EU. |

I HATE when they report how many Brits died. Thousands die in a natural disaster. People walk on by. "3 Brits died" in same disaster. People suddenly voice what a terrible shame it was.

Fox still think Saeed Al-Ghamdi flew the plane at 911. In fact they believe anything that they think will get them a _iewer.
I wonder how they get on when they cross the border into Canada while driving! |

Reports on the BBC website that a war ship has recovered 40 bodies and the numbers are growing.

Errr not true.
The elevator is the safest form of travel.
Air travel is only safe because of the stringent rules applied to it, if you took the same rules and applied them to vehicles I think cars would be safer.
The genius and longevity of the jet engine is also is weakest point.... One working part! |
