5 and 2 diet

Hi everyone any one here doing are has done the five and two diet.

Any thoughts on this would be glad to hear.

I believe the "experts" suggest that it's ok for rapid short term weight loss, but completely useless if you want to exercise too. 500 calories just isn't enough to fuel a workout.

It's not a healthy amount of calories to support an active lifestyle. Just a short cut for rapid weight loss, which isn't sustainable. Plenty of better ways to lose weight in a healthier manner.

Nope. You're meant to eat 'normally' (healthily) 5 days, and 2 days 'fasting'.

but really.... 500 calories per day for two days gives you a 300 calorie deficit, plus plays mind games with your metabolism.

I'd not bother myself though.

OP it works great if you do it right. Ignore the bullshit. Do whatever diet works for you. Take it easy on fasting days, work out on normal days.

It works great long term.

Diets work. Negative people don't.

We did this diet earlier in the year and it worked for us. Over time you find that you end up reducing your portion sizes on your non fasting days.

I found it helped by downloading a calorie counter app to work out what I would eat on our fasting days.

I tried the 5 2 diet and on my 2 days that I was only eating 500 cals was ok for couple of weeks but I work long shifts and felt light headed and dizzy after 3 months of doing it. I wouldn't encourage anyone to do it as for weight loss it's about maintaining a healthy life style for life. Portion size and keeping an eye on your calorie intake as well as exercise is key. My fitness pal app on smart phones is really good. I've lost 2 stone since doing this. Before this I literally tried every diet in the sun and then put it back on again but I have maintained my 2 stone weight loss and actually enjoy eating healthy foods now rather than junk. My taste for things has totally changed. Used to hate soup now I love it. Good luck either way xx

the woman I run ith on Mondays would say otherwise. she always fasts on Mondays and does an off road run in the mornings plus a (admittedly slower) run on the evening with me of about 5 miles.

she is a very keen mountain runner who won her category in at least one event this year

Years ago a semi retired vet suggested I fasted my pet spaniel one day per week and gave him water only.

He explained that if he had been wild he wouldn't catch food every day and that the fasting day gave his intestines time to rid themselves of toxins.

I decided to try this myself and have been doing so ever since. My spaniel lived to be 17yrs old and I ail very little.

runners are generally rubbish at eating sensibly. I know a load of them . And I am one . Lifestyle change not diet. Tweak things that can become permanent . Not temporary

There's a friend I know who is into throwing kettle bells around and lifting weights who's used this diet to lower his weight - by reducing how much he ate - which was per portion, probably more than he should be... He's gone from 36 inch waist to 28.

I think it's just a way of controlling how much is eaten - and alongside a decent about of physical activity - it does sound like it could help some people reach their goals.

I went to a lecture by some hospital nutritionists who tackled the pros and cons of all the popular diets from the bizarre to the more well known commercial ones. They highly rated the 5:2 diet and said it is one of the few they would recommend.

I'm not sure it is for me though... shift work is hard enough without fasting too. I think it's back to Slimming World next week.

I tried it for a while, didn't suit me. Got far too hungry on fasting days.

Now I've found an eating/exercise plan that suits me and is easy to stick to. Give it a try. You might find it great. It's not like you need to spend out on anything to get started. There are lots of recipes online for meals of 500cals or less if you choose to eat one meal a day at dinner time like I did.

correction....eat RIGHT, move more.

I could eat as many mars bars it takes to reach my goal calorie intake but I wouldn't lose weight because I am wouldn't be eating the right nutrition.

yeah I've heard of that too! I went on the 'common sense and willpower' diet last year and dropped over five stone, still on it now...true story.

Didn't follow a jot of a an actual diet plan or see the inside of a real gym. It's all un nesscassary for most people but that's what's been sold as the solution and that's what a lot of folk do.

Still.....If it works or them then its pretty bulletproof and who am I to argue

We did it three years ago, I lost 2.5 stone, and have kept it off. The only diet we have ever done (do one every Lent) where the weight has stayed off. Plus we eat more guilt-free goodies than ever before!

My advice, buy, and read, the book thoroughly first. Starting is hardest, but we found betting each other worked well: "Bet you can't go 8 hrs without eating", then "Bet you can't go 12", or "Bet you couldn't last 24 hours on 500 calories".

We started saying we'd do it for a week, then 2, then till Easter.

Plenty of drinks help, I find low cal hot choc in the evening of the diet-day a must, and an early night (which is a bonus!)

But read the book, it's worth it, and good luck.

There is a lot of rubbish written in terms of criticism of low carbon diets. A diet using fresh meat and fish which you cook yourself plus salads fruit a small number if nuts etc is helpful to many people.

Otherwise manage portion control using small plates!

I haven't read through the thread but I gained weight doing 5:2 but my brother in law and sister both lost a lot of weight.

Give it a go if you want to give it a go. We don't all respond in the same way to diets.

i am not a diet expert by any stretch of the imagination but know a few people who have tried ' no carb ' diets and they

never seem to last ..from what ive heard from friends depriving yourself of one food group is not a long term solution but i wish everyone well in their endeavours

Yes, it works well if you have the will power. I've done in for 2 years, lost 20 lbs initially and sticking with it has kept that off. The 'starvation days' are a little tough but the results (and the 'normal' days) make it worthwhile!
