I think the best advise is to find something you actually enjoy doing, going to a gym can be soul destroying, they're depressing as hell some places that I've tried out, running, cycling, swimming, any kind of martial art, are all good for getting the ticker in shape.

Gym is great, join a fitness class.
Start a training program, a lot of people look like they are lost in a gym.
Everyone starts somewhere, No experience? Fat ? Chubby ?
Dont worry you will notice a difference within a few months with a good diet and exercise. |

I love my gym. It's a little independent though. I used to belong to Fitness first. I think I was the only fat person there. |

"Just keep at it, diet is a key part!
Fitness first is a good gym."
Thanks but I'll stick to the advice of my qualified PT.
And I think we'll have to agree to disagree on Fitness First being a good gym. |

I've been to a fitness first, David Lloyd, and a fit or free gym, they're all the same, very depressing, your regular sted heads on the loose weights, and the rest of the equipment bein used by what I can only describe as drones, that's why joinin some sort of keep/get fit class would be better, you'll make new friends and have a laugh along the way, far more rewarding. |

Use to be years ago before changing profession.
Money was ok at £20 hour but only got like £60-£100 daily, needed a more stable income.
Still have experience in that field for tips and info.

I'm only squatting 50-70. How much longer before I can play in grown up games? I'd love to have a go at that sort of stuff, but I just don't have the will power to stick to the diet. The training I love. Just my love of food lets me down.

Is that the same if I run a mile in 10 minutes or a mile in 50 minutes? "
It'll not be much different... although I'm not sure it's possible to "run" a mile in 50 mins, unless you were maybe running up a mile long down escalator |

I work on increments of 10kg and try upping every 2 weeks keep your reps the same unless your doing a heavyset for you that would be like 90-100kg go for 4 reps in 3 sets
Diet wise I load on carbs and protein do half a shake before your work out and half after then get to morrisons and treat yourself to a full chicken (extra tasty) of course lol
Men need to keep workouts to a max of 45 mins anything longer than that you turn catabolic basically turning it into an insurance exercise that doesn't build muscle
So all in all load up on good food
Keep your muscles loaded don't let them get too used to the weights your lifting keep upping within a certain degree and focus on all muscle groups on different days
God I don't half ramble on lol |

I don't need any fitness advice and I would rather boil my own head than join a gym but good on you for starting a positive thread trying to gain attention rather than one moaning about not getting meets or replies to messages...people don't like those.

I advise skimming the from the company coffers or depending on your level of responsibility within the company framework, embezzlement, this should close the gap between effort and returns. Hope this helps. |

Just make sure you push yourself if you think your out of puff go for one more rep just make sure you have a spotter lol

The thing about going to the gym is you need a planning and objective of what you want to achieve
I see most people in the gym aimlessly jumping from one thing to another or not using the correct form. |

"That 45 minute before you turn catabolic is simply not true.
Explain? Please
Easiest way is just to link you; http://muscleevo.net/how-long-should-your-workout-last/
Now can you explain why it does? Its genuinely one of the strangest things ive heard fitness-wise"
That was an interesting read 25% of it was a graph the other 75% was a story of a Bulgarian trainer
There's obviously 2 sides to this one I'll be sticking with my 45 mins you do as you please |

"Give me advice then please
I will be back to cutting down in new year
I have a busy job with long hours so no time for messing about with gyms...suggestions please

My main exercise is to cycle the 10 miles each way to work and back three days a week. I find that I can maintain this regardless of any other time constraints which may stop me getting to the gym.
I also find that going to the gym on my way home from work was easier than going home and then getting myself back out afterwards.
Anita goes every morning on her way to work. Getting showered and ready for work after her workout saves a bit of time too. |

Depends on the aim, but for cutting down I would suggest circuit training than jogging which is less effective and can be boring
Burn calories and strip away fat or sex in various positions |

Well yes, it's pretty relevant as he pioneered the whole idea lol.
I dont doubt the effectiveness of a 45 minute work out but to claim that someone will go catabolic after a certain period is harmful and incorrect advice. Can you imagine haha, after 45 minutes your body is just like "nope, that heavy ass set of squats you just did doesnt count towards anything, you passed the 45 minute mark". On YouTube there are tonnes of people who will train up to two hours who look a hell of a lot better than anyone on here, no offence of course, im obviously including myself in that. |

Not gonna argue for or against the 45 minute rule though personally I think it simply over complicates things, but do you really reckon everyone who trains for over 2 hours is natural? |

Some are, most arent granted. I was only using that as an extreme example, I generally train for an hour and a half (I go with two friends), I find to lift the heaviest I need enough rest between sets but everyone's different, theres no way I could fit what I do into 45 minutes |

I think it's a reasonable goal. Providing one takes the training seriously and doesn't use dancing as an alternative workout with alcohol as a recovery drink. |

This is what I mean by over complicating things. To me, in all the years I've been lifting, the obvious thing that jumps out at me the most is that strong people are typically larger and more muscular than those who aren't (provided those strong people are lean enough to see their muscles). This simplifies things in my eyes, when you take away all the crap and conjecture about 'feeling your muscles working' or 'go for the pump!' and a million other ways magazines and websites love to overcomplicate the very, VERY simple matter of 'just lift the fucking weight!' - if you want to be bigger, you have to get stronger (with good form of course), and that's what I tailor my lifting around, either lift more weight than I did last time, or do more reps with the same weight, and it just so happens that after around 45 minutes, my ability to do this starts to taper off, I'm too tired and out of breath to continue with any meaningful degree of effort. |

You've seen the picture of me doing shots of mulled wine at 16 miles?
But yes I concede that some of tge more unorthodox aspects of my training probably were counter productive!

calories in vs calories out is a simple formula for weight loss and will wor for most folk and their new year goals
its when your trying to build lean tissue aswell as cut bodyfat that it gets a bit more complex with tailored macro splits n shit

Yes, all you have to do is the same as before but faster. A doughnut prior to running will give you an energy boost too. A coffee will also perk you up a bit before running as well. |

Its pointless arguing the toss over this as said there's two sides to it I'll do what's worked for me for the last 9 years and you do yours all I can say is I've been successful in my training methods and won't be revising them anytime soon and I'm sure your the same happy training |

Hitting a PB, especially dead lift absolutely takes it out of you. Couple of warm up sets and go for it. At this point my training is almost over. I tend to only do this a few times maybe once a month. The rest of the time I follow a routine mixing it up slightly. This way you can see yourself improving. I'm off the age now where six packs and being "ripped" aren't important. Increasing in size and mass are the goal. |

It's an individual thing. Someone like yourself might have the right frame to carry the extra body mass and look better for it, but I've gained two stone this year, and whilst with my clothes on people tell me I look better for it, when I'm in the locker room at the gym all I when I look in the mirror is someone's slightly pudgy dad. My muscles and definition are important to me, they tell me and those looking at me that I'm a guy who works hard with what he has, knows what he's doing, and comes across all the better for it. |

For those who cannot afford a gym or get embarrassed working out in public try the following routine I picked up from an old rugby coach:
Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side.
With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax.
Each day you'll find that you can hold this position
for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags.
Then try 50-lb potato bags and eventually try
to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato bag in
each hand and hold your arms straight for more
than a full minute. (I'm at this level).
After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.....

I recall from my Army days that gyms were not really necessary in order to attain fitness and physique. Running, press ups and sit ups require no membership and can be conducted anywhere and at any time. The plan is very easy to follow as well.... A little bit more every day. |

I remember being in a gym with another county player and being approached by a couple of top heavy weightlifters...
"how did you develop your legs like that?" they asked...
"We play rugby" was the reply...conversation ends...
They couldn't have been weightlifters, they generally have massive legs as its all legs they way they lift.
No, you are quite right, that couldn't possibly be true. How silly of me...
They sound like "recreational" bodybuilders!
I didn't get their workout history, it was a very brief interaction.
If I was claiming to be a qualified instructor I might have shown more interest... "
so a couple of fat fcukers approached you in the gym and asked you how you train your legs

While I'm here....anyone need any financial advice?
To save up, first you'll need to earn more than you spend.
I just choked on my pickled onion! Now my nose is burning... "

"For those who cannot afford a gym or get embarrassed working out in public try the following routine I picked up from an old rugby coach:
100lb bag of taters? A 25kg sack is only 55lb....100lb is a monserous weight to be able to hold in each hand like that....where you getting these size bags of spuds?
Also....you could get some weights, I prefer my fitness equipment to come from from a sports shop over a greengrocers wholesaler "
the clue to the whole routine is in the last line...
as a wise man once told me, never let the truth get in the way of a good story...or on this occasion...A joke... |

No, a couple of men with overdeveloped upper torsos and underdeveloped legs approached a team mate and I.
It was a throw away anecdote following on from the thread of the conversation which I didn't realise would provoke so much interest. |

"Gym is great, join a fitness class.
Start a training program, a lot of people look like they are lost in a gym.
Everyone starts somewhere, No experience? Fat ? Chubby ?
Dont worry you will notice a difference within a few months with a good diet and exercise." When do you start? |

I thought it was funny
But there's so much testosterone and metaphorical cock waving in this thread people are maybe getting overly sensitive. Well it's that or the roids |

I find the paradox that everyone is so alpha and has to be top dog while discussing something that is also so incredibly homo-erotic very amusing. |
