"What news?"

They've gone into administration and it was announced on Christmas day

How inept are the managers of this company? In an age when there is not enough capacity in the home delivery market, they still managed to make huge losses.

Last year the company was bought by an investment company for £1 and now they go into administration. Sounds like asset stripping to me!

Yep I'm self employed with them. They spent 2 million on new scanners last month?? Why spend that if things were that bad. All I hope is that I get paid what I'm owed as I've worked my butt off for the last 6 weeks.

They did say on the news that people would be paid this months money.

I'm very sorry this has happened, we know what it's like to lose your job suddenly like that, I hope you and the other people find something else quickly.

big users like amazon tesco argos etc will have them nailed to the floor on price barley making any profit on the deliverys there comes a point were something has to give and in this case its city link me thinks at least one other direct parcel delivery company will follow soon as the market is saturated at the moment but the companys havent made provision for the upturn so now find themselves having to use loss making measurers (agency drivers and contractors ) just to clear the backlog

"

Why would you hope that people lose their jobs?

I was shocked by the timing of the Christmas day announcement and what I perceive to be the level of mismanagement at a time when Internet shopping and therefore the growth in demand for efficient delivery is a retail phenomenon.

The business was bust which was why it was bought for £1. The firm that bought it then pumped in £40m to try and make it successful, and they have lost everything. Not exactly asset stripping! Does sound like a very badly run company though and the handling of the administration is appalling. Very sorry for all its staff.

Yes kets hope yodel are next

For your info yodel are a budget courier and there aint too many of them around. Ok so they messed up this xmas but on the whole they do a grand job. If couriers like yodel go to the wall then maybe your happy to pay £12 at the post office to send a pair if shoes!!

As for city link. Rentokill got it wrong to start with and sold it a couple of years ago for next to nothing. City link closed around 8 depots in october to save some money as it is being drained from them from resources.

They invested heavily in technology in the hope that would increase the RPU which it has but no where near enough. Alot of losses for these companies come from false insurance claims, agency workers and fat cats at the top without a clue.

Brighton - even Hove!

The timing of the announcement showed the lack of care management had for the staff as well as their business incompetence.

"What other option do they have steve? Is there ever a good time?"

There is never a good time, insolvency laws being what they are, if a business is trading insolvently it has to act otherwise directors/owners risk going to jail. No doubt they would have hoped that the pre-Christmas trading would have been sufficient to carry on, but once it was clear that wasn't the case and in the absence of further monies from the shareholders the company would have had little choice but to do what it did.

The fact that people would lose their jobs doesn't mean a really shit company should continue trading.

What do you suggest, a crap company subsidy?

Can you imagine if they'd anounced it while all their drivers still had a van load of parcels?

Sadly the parcel business is fiercely competitive and most customers expect the cost to be as low as possible . It never ceases to amaze me when people complain about parcels not being delivered but they make no effort to be in when they know a parcel is coming. If Citylink were in difficulty would it make any difference as to when they made their announcement?. By Christmas eve they would know revenues for the period and whether it was viable to continue trading. It is a criminal offence to continue to trade if a company is insolvent. If this was the case the only choice was to inject more funds or place the company in liquidation. Whilst it is sad that people have lost their jobs , other couriers will take them on as parcels will still nèed to be delivered.

It should also be pointed out that rents are paid quarterly and Xmas day is one of the quarterly days on which rents become due . If the depots were leased and Citylink were unable to pay their rents , appointing a receiver was inevitable. At least they ensure that all parcels were delivered prior to Xmas .

The problem with it all really is we (my company) who trade direct with city link around 3000 shipments per day knew they were shutting on christmas eve around 3 weeks ago.

Well i say we knew, we had heard the rumour but nothing confirmed. So it came as no shock to us.

"Alot of losses for these companies come from false insurance claims, agency workers and fat cats at the top without a clue."

i'm sure you mean employment agencies not agency workers .... agency workers are generally poorly paid with no securities regarding things like sickness pay, holiday pay etc. and often are required to use their own vehicle with little recompense other than for fuel. besides, most are on zero hour contracts and thus have to go through the redundancy cycle on a weekly basis.
