News stories today are telling how Brad and Angelina Pitt-Jolie are supporting their childs wishes to be called John.

Their fourth child was assigned female a birth but has continued to show an affinity to all things masculine. Recently the family appeared at a film premiere with all children dressed in smart suits with smart short masculine haircuts.

How would you feel if your child decided they wanted to be seen as a boy or a girl from such a young age?

Personally I think that they have it right. They are allowing their child to be the person they want to be but I think there is a balance needed not to go full on down the gender swap/trans route (obviously no gender changes can happen physically at this stage). Just allow the child to explore who they ant to be and accept that for some it might not be the gender they were born.

I have read and watch a video about another family that did something similar only they tried to force their child to be a girl for the first 6 years of her life. When they finally relented and accepted that she wanted to live as a boy the change in their child was immediate. They went from an introverted unahappy 6 year old girl to a happy, bright and fun loving boy. They lost some friends and family as a result of their choice for their child but their life was much fuller for it.

This is also true with hermaphrodites it is quite wrong to surgically interfere as often happens leaving someone stuck with that gender for the rest of their life.

In societies where they are allowed to develop naturally nature takes its course.

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

At the end of the day, it is more important to raise a child as a person not a gender. It's how I consciously raised my child and she's never felt limited by a gender role.

sounds sensible ..allow a child to develop their own way rather than imposing pre determined expectations upon them

Interesting post. I think we can all agree on them supporting john.

Think it is too easy for people to say I would let the child develop however they want, but the reality is our society and our common human traits make this harder. Little example

Boy kid falls over 'come on son your ok. show me your strong don't cry'

Girl kid falls over 'big cuddles aww that must have hurt are you ok?

Just a little odd example but does convey the general slight change in mindset.

The Inuit (eskimo) recognise six genders.
