Watched the plumber who fitted our new boiler do one. Seemed straight forward enough. Wouldn't know how to describe doing it though I'm afraid.

. If you do it , try and check your system for any minor leaks at valves. Power flushing can cause leaks in a weak system or even radiators bursting under the pressure. Why do you want to power flush?.

I've my system under service contract the water doesn't get as hot as it used to the radiators don't either so I called the company and they said it needs a power flush which isnot covered and its 300 plus vat,..

it depends on what type of heating system you have.

ie a open vented or unvented

Power flushing a sealed system is easy.

A gravity fed system with need capping in the header tank.

If you can get a power flush machine then it takes about 7-8 hours or more depending on the system size and how bad it's contaminated.

Add some X800 and run it overnight, will dislodge some of the crap.

Also if you do get a company in to do it they should use a TDS meter and the system water should be within 10% of tap water quality.

£300 isn't a bad price either

sentinel x400 from b&q if it actually needs done ...british gas engineers are notorious for telling people they need this done ...we were quoted £800 and and got an independent to look at the boiler and problem fixed for £120

If it's a relatively new system say under 15 years and it's a sealed system, you can't possibly need it power flushing.

Sealed systems are designed not to corrode because there sealed so unless you've had problems and have been adding lots of fresh top up water there's no real way for it to have corroded.

I'd check your pump and boiler thermostat before going down that route

. I was quoted exactly the same price by a reputable central heating engineer. My contracts are with British Gas but I consider their charges for boiler installation or power flushing to be excessive . In the event of any query from British Gas I will keep a receipt for all the work done .

P.O. Box DE1 0NQ

Have done this a few times for customers. It's much easier if

a) ya know what ya doing and

b) the householder is available to provide tea & biccies regularly

do yourself a favour run your hot tap if a radiator gets warm whilst running hot tap if it does depending on which boiler you have it can be your heat exchanger

but if really want to flush your system drain it fully refill it and drain it again and watch the colour of the water some systems are really black with rust colour

also when done run your system 1/2 an hour is ample on starting your system up stay near boiler any loud noise from boiler can be air in your boiler not checked properly it can explode most new ones have a system to bleed the air from the boiler and pump at start up

with power flush shut your system down empty all the pressure from the central heating either by using bleed valve or using the tap on the boiler getting the stuff in is another subject

either take a valve off a radiator and insert the stuff that way or try to inject it through the bleed nipple its not easy that way

i prefer to run it for 1/2 a day then drain and fill it then drain and fill again then you need to use the inhibitor

good luck
