Apple's Broken Promises

Are you a Apple fan?

Do you care about how it's manufactured?

I'm not an Apple fan. I haven't seen the Panorama but I am no longer surprised at what companies do to reduce manufacturing costs and make their products as profitable as possible (even with the mark up for name alone).

I think that it's probably commonplace in all manufacturing industries in Asia regardless of brand, just that its topical to do some Apple bashing, I have an iPhone and other apple products....... I'll continue to buy them, it's unfortunate that they haven't looked at Samsung and others to compare.

i think to be fair, the technologies industry as a whole is highly exploitative of the asian workforce and most other industries have dirty secrets when using overseas labour

Its no excuse saying because others do it its fine and apple make higher profits so it wouldn't kill them to make a little less and ensure people who make their products had a decent life.

We've heard this story so many times, if it's not Coca-Cola, it's Apple, if it's not Apple it's someone else.

We know China has an undeniable hard work ethic and failure is seen as a disgrace. Suicides are common place...or so it's reported and the truth is often difficult to fathom.

The job any news broadcaster is to create and sell stories. Last nights program was only part of the truth, what about the consumer? our demand for cheaper tech' increases and company profits soar.

Who's to blame, the Chinese, The Company or The Consumer?

We all consider different things expensive.

I think that my Mac Pro, my Mac Air, my iPad and my iPhone are not expensive considering the amount of income that they help me generate. I think when they were more expensive they were a business expense that I had to bear.

I think you're getting worth and cost mixed up personally.

Their component parts may only cost a few pennies, but their worth to me is far more than the cost of the parts - therefore I value them highly and don't mind paying that amount of money for them.

I find blaming the public illogical, we know they can't be trusted or we wouldn't need laws, we have laws to stop people misusing the environment, workforce and such.

All were doing is exporting our way around these laws by going to countries that don't have our laws.

Its farcical people blame the public over corporate ethics and profit over living standards. It is interesting how people square their conscience over buying products made by unethical multinationals though.

Consumers might like low prices, but they cannot demand them. Suppliers set the price, we have to pay that price if we want the goods. The idea that the consumer demands low prices and suppliers are beholden to them to give them low prices is not the truth. The reverse is actually the case, otherwise companies would not bother to produce for such minimal profit margins or if you take it to its conclusion, losses. They just let us think we are in control of prices. That's how they get you to buy their shit. That you probably don't even need. Or want, truth be told.

That is completely illogical too, if it was just about making money you could make way more getting the same product from cheaper alternatives, the reason people buy apple is the millions they spend on marketing to create an object of desire, objects that are desired are bought by everyone "tools" are only bought by people in that trade.

"I wanted it cheap" has nothing to do with needing it cheap or being intrinsic to making a living from it, if you made so much money from it, why did you need it cheap!

You're not a photographer are you?

That's the excuse they usually come out with when justifying their ridiculous attachment to a company that time and time again product expensive style over content when there are far cheaper, more viable alternatives (apart from the iPad, which is a decent tablet but still massively overpriced)

As for the ethical issues, it's an unfortunate fact of life, and while we make demands as consumers, it will never change...and you'd be naive to think it was just Apple that exploit their workers in this way.

Same here, I find everything about apple, wrong. Ethically unsound, enviromentally damaging, grossly overpriced, invasive, controlling and the constant new editions of its products are really just an obvious piss take of their customers.

And I still think The Beatles should have won the case.

Apple say :-

Apple Supplier Code of Conduct

Apple is committed to the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility

and ethical conduct. Apple’s suppliers are required to provide safe working conditions,

treat workers with dignity and respect, act fairly and ethically, and use environmentally

responsible practices wherever they make products or perform services for Apple.

Apple requires its suppliers to operate in accordance with the principles in this Apple

Supplier Code of Conduct (“Code”) and in full compliance with all applicable laws

and regulations. This Code goes beyond mere compliance with the law by drawing

upon internationally recognized standards to advance social and environmental

responsibility. This Code outlines Apple’s expectations for Supplier conduct regarding

labor and human rights, health and safety, environmental protection, ethics, and

management practices.

In reality its been proven that its not true.

The physical components may be cheap to produce but the cost of innovation, maintaining IP and providing a service isn't free. If you want a device with good features, you'll have to pay. I don't own a MacBook but I can see why they're expensive - they retain value, they're more reliable and the customer service of Apple surpasses any other company.

Ethically speaking regarding the production, this situation isn't exclusive to Apple production. China is not part of OECD so it doesn't adhere to the soft laws we expect companies to implement for their workers. Plus the governments involved haven't regulated the outsourced manufacturing process enough to force companies like Foxconn into line.

It's definitely unfair to just chastise Apple; Sony, Samsung, Dell and HP (plus a whole bunch of toy manufacturers) are all guilty of choosing these types of manufacturers.

Soft laws!!!.

I must remember that next time workers rights come up on here!.

The one thing technology devices don't need is a value retention, there out of date by the time your warranty runs up and speaking of warranties Samsung offer a two year one on all their products I believe apple is only 1 year.

Customer services with their glittering shops is where they spend their money I agree but that's just all part of the bullshit marketing to give it value it shouldn't have.

If coca cola and Pepsi are the two most recognisable brands in the world and taste so great why do they spend the most on advertising?

A soft law is one imposed by organisations which isn't legally binding (there's no legal repercussions for not adhering to them) but it does regulate a code of conduct of practice. It's a good thing.

I don't think retention of value is a bad thing. Most Apple devices resell for more than 50% despite age. Some are close to 100%. This is because they're more reliable than (for example) Asus or Compaq laptops. If I buy something, I don't want it to lose value immediately, I'd like the option of reselling it to upgrade in the future.

I also don't agree that the customer service isn't important. If I spend any amount of money on anything, I expect it to last a reasonable amount of time and to not jump through hoops to get it fixed. My iPhone charger broke within the first year, and they gave me a new one without questions. It's a good level of service which can't be knocked - I definitely didn't receive the same from PC World.

Coca Cola has had an incredible marketing and PR strategy success despite what they've done in India. Maintaining the branding is as important as infiltrating the market - this is why some products fall out of fashion. Companies use marketing to cut out the traditional sales cycle as it typically saves money in the long run.
