Breaking up for Xmas

Does your workplace shut down for Christmas and new years?
I've never worked anywhere that does that and can't really understand why they shut down for a week or 2 weeks, a few days over Christmas is of course fine but a full week?
Does the company not like money?
Just my thoughts.
With all that said, 2 weeks over Christmas and new years would be quite nice! |

The office stays open but people rarely come in, it's usually the support staff that do. Most outstanding business is closed the week before and our new year kicks off early Jan. The break is nice. |

I enjoy the time off,
It gives me a chance to see my family and enjoy some nights out, I could break up tomorrow and not go back until the 5th, But I have the option to work over the holidays I just haven't made my mind up yet |

My friend works for a builders merchant, they close for a week over Christmas because, well no one builds during Christmas!!
Every company I've worked for has either opened or required me to work at least part of Christmas day. |

I broke up today and return Monday 5th January. We always shut over Christmas, I'd hate not getting the break. I work very hard all year round so it's a nice rest spent relaxing with family. Lucy. |

My ex used to work doing shop refits mostly for sainsbury. I'm sure the company loved money but no supermarket is gonna get dismantled over the Xmas period. They used to have very little work early of December and then 3 weeks off from about the 10th December onwards.

A world all of his own |
My place of work shuts down from the 23rd to the 5th of January. It just works best owing to the nature of our business and the amount of people employed, i.e. it'd create chaos with some people wanting to work/not work etc over the Christmas period.
Plus it allows for essential maintenance work to be carried out that can't be done during production times.
We also close down for 3 weeks during the summer for the same reasons. |

I remember in one of my old jobs, no one was allowed to book a day off in December because it was too busy and they needed everyone to work.
No holidays at all allowed in the month of December and back to work on Boxing Day. And tough if you have to work on New Years Day, still not allowed a day off.
A delightful place... |

Mine is just closed on the bank holidays. I'll be in work between Christmas and new year but I actually quite like it as it's really quiet and laid back then. |

My job is closely linked to the national houesbuilders, November and December is silly season for us and this year has been particularly bad.construction industry shuts down for Xmas period so I sm finishing on Monday and not back till the 5th Jan. To be honest I cannot wait for the break.. However I have worked in retail so have done the boxing day working so feel peoples pain who have to do it.xxx |

MAMOBA, miles and miles of bugger all (Aberdeenshire) |
I finished work last night after a meeting, and will not go back until Monday 5th January.
The nature of my job, supporting charities and community groups, the work dries up anyway, and it would be twiddling my thumbs covering the hours, so I'd rather use some of my annual leave (which I struggle to use anyway) to cover the time.
I'm really looking forward to the break! |

I have worked in a number of jobs that provide infrastructure and infrastructure maintenance. Without the excuse of a Christmas shut-down, work would have been much harder. Sometimes it pays a company to get the majority of staff off the premises on leave they earned anyway.
But not any more, now I only work when I feel like it. |

I guess it depends on the sector the company is in. If it costs more to open than it does to close down? Some just don't do the business over the festive period. |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
I am self employed and finished today until 5th January because I can.
I have run organisations where I have closed down from early afternoon on Christmas Eve to 2nd January as a thank you to staff as I couldn't give them more money. |

My workplace goes to minimum manning levels at Xmas...I love having the time off between Xmas and NY. When i worked at the prison I had to go in between Xmas and NY and I hated it so in my working life I've only done that for 2 Christmases |

In my previous job I would work everyday from Boxing day straight though till the 3rd Jan.
But now I have from the 22nd - 26th off. We also close early on new years eve and closed on new years day. Plus it generally quite this time of year.
