"As the gunman held people hostage in a cafe in Sydney, thousands of messages of support have been posted online for Muslims in Australia who are afraid of an Islamophobic backlash.
The spark was this post on Facebook by Rachael Jacobs, who said she'd seen a woman she presumed was Muslim silently removing her hijab while sitting next to her on the train: "I ran after her at the train station. I said 'put it back on. I'll walk with u'. She started to cry and hugged me for about a minute - then walked off alone'.
The story of Rachael's encounter with a woman in religious attire inspired this Twitter user, 'Sir Tessa', aka Tessa Kum: "If you reg take the #373 bus b/w Coogee/MartinPl, wear religious attire, & don't feel safe alone: I'll ride with you. @ me for schedule," user 'Sir Tessa' tweeted. Moments later she tweeted "Maybe start a hashtag? What's in #illridewithyou?"
Thousands of people have now joined the spontaneous campaign, offering to meet Muslim people at their local stations and to ride with them on their journey."

I grew up in a very multicultural area and have always hadd muslim friends. In the main they were lovely peaceful humble people, it saddens me how they are vilified due to the actions of a minority.
That is a lovely story and gives me a little hope for humanity. |

Indeed.. It's sad that it seems to have come to that in some places.
So lovely of the people who are showing their support in such a way. |

"Sounds like the media creating a storm over a problem which is probably no different now than it has always been."
A nice, happy, warm and sunny storm though - hopefully it'll breed similar weather conditions in other places where such precipitation types are needed. |

Have you read any of the islam threads on here? I suspect the attitudes of some in Australia arenlt too different to the attitudes of some here.
I know women that have been spat at for wearing a hijab. I know women who have had people try to tear their hijab off them. I think that reaching out and offering friendship in these times is a good thing. And after the events in Sydney today I suspect it is being widely welcomed |

I don't see it this way. It points towards Muslims needing 'minders' to go about their everyday tasks. Hardly conducive to harmony and understanding if they are saying don't go out alone or else take a 'white' friend with you. |

Its showing unity, it shows people can support each other in a time of need no matter of cultural differences and religious beliefs

Who is saying don't go out alone?
When Lee Rigby was murdered the reaction of some in this country (primarily the EDL) was to head in to Greenwich and stir up trouble. Meanwhile Australia has shown a touching spontaneous gesture of solidarity.
I know which is the biggest blow to extremists and I know which reaction I prefer |

I think you've misunderstood the point. Some felt unsafe, so someone said they'd look after others in the same situation. Other people joined in to say they'd do the same as well - to highlight that no one should feel unsafe. It's not a PR exercise to say "hey, we Muslims are alright really". |

It sounds like a lovely idea and like others have said, unity is the best way of not giving these extremists what they want - which is to cause division and unrest. |

Sadly the knee the reaction always happens.
It is like after 9/11, an American reporter went to an airport dressed in jeans and tshirt, no one bothered him.
The next day he dressed as a Muslim, he got treated badly by security, spat at and generally treated with contempt, just because he looked Muslim.
It is nice to hear about things like this. |

Beautiful example of unity and peace.
There is no room for ignorance, most people know that it's not Islam that preaches hatred, this stems from political ideology, these groups use religion to for their political gains.
Terrorism has no religion and terrorism has not humanity.
Great to read so many messages of support and unity. Together we stand united. We condemn any form of violence, hate or terror.

Thank you - unfortnately it these people who are ignorant or uneducated who fall prey to extremism.
Islam started over 1400 years, yet prior to 9/11 was there any mention of Islamic terrorism?
Doesn't take a genius to work out that terrorism and islam don't mix, but people seem keen to mix the 2 up.
We just pray for peace and unity. God bless everyone. |

Sometimes things dont sound as they are.
The TV gives a better story, you see the actual flowers being laid as a mark of respect in Martin Place/Street. You may find the very next story is about the 'I'll ride with you#'. That was the case yesterday. |

"Don't bash this thread up like the Taliban one yesterday was bashed up, it should be for showing respect. IMO"
But as the thread you refered to that is simply too much for some people. Their hatred and mistrust of islam is such that any opportunity is reason to voice their contempt without realising that bigotry and intolerance are as much a part of the problem as extremism.
To be honest it's beyond my comprehension how people can find in this gesture a reason to take offence. I pity people with that much hatred inside them |

Same philosophy of DAISH and the fanatics. They say Bush and Tony Bliar invaded us, killed our children, destroyed our countries, the blame is on all westeners and Christians. Yet 99.99% of muslims dont agree with muslim fanatics nor most westerners agree with western Islamophobics. The sad thing is the fanatics _iews and actions that are most heard of in the media. What gets me about this story is that the Australian woman’s original post said “and the (presumably) Muslim woman sitting next to me on the train silently removes her hijab”.
A hijab is just a headscarf, which is worn by the women of many cultures, including Catholics and Jews, of which there are many in Sydney but the Australian woman just assumed that the other woman was Muslim and needed accompanying. The white knights of the world seem to be applauding an act of racial stereotyping.

Oh, ok then. |

Here is the fundamental problem
Religion f**ks up humanity. If you are stupid enough to believe what amounts to a bunch of fairy tales then get on with it. Just don't involve the rest of us in it.
This applies to ALL religions. They are all as f**ked up as each other.

"What gets me about this story is that the Australian woman’s original post said “and the (presumably) Muslim woman sitting next to me on the train silently removes her hijab”.
A hijab is just a headscarf, which is worn by the women of many cultures, including Catholics and Jews, of which there are many in Sydney but the Australian woman just assumed that the other woman was Muslim and needed accompanying. The white knights of the world seem to be applauding an act of racial stereotyping.
Some people will believe anything."
I believe in Santa.
And fairies.
And aliens.
And nice people.

"

There's nothing funny about people killing each other in the name of a non-existent God. |

Trouble is there's idiots n fanatics on both sides.
I would happily defend anyone's right to practice their religion privately n quietly.
I think Americans can learn alot from Australians.

I think there should be respect from both sides. Religious and non-religious. Atheist weirdo's and religious freaks .... and everything in between ... can still be total arseholes. |

"So instead of showing support to the two Australians who died everyone is supporting the muslim community instead.
Thats what the press want you to believe. Dont forget anyone who dares critise this peaceful religeon will be threatened with violence.
Wondered how long it would be before the Islamophobes jumped onto this thread.
Islamaphobia
A word created
by fascists and used by cowards
to manipulate
Morons."
Who's the fascist, who's the coward and who's the moron? Not sure what your point is. |

Phobia is a fear of something. At this time you should be in fear of the people who follow Islam.
"
If you want to give in to the terrorists by living in the fear and terror that they want that's your choice but don't expect me to join you in your defeatist paranoia.
"
I agree its not all of them but it dont take an army to start a war.
"
Your right, it just takes a knee jerk reaction against a load of innocent people
"
Every time questions are asked people shout racist or ...phobes
"
I've not called any one a racist so don't try playing that card. Islam is a religion, not a race.
I have called you an islamophobe because that's what you are, scared of Muslims and Islam. You even say so yourself and that we should all live in fear of Islam and Muslims; that's what islamophobia is.
"
No wonder nothing gets sorted."
Nothing is getting sorted because short sighted people are looking for quick fix solutions and they never work in the long term.
