Mine is a nightmare as well, if he wants anything he just goes and buys it through the year. Tend to focus now on buying things like concert tickets, theatre vouchers or things like those driving experience days - as he enjoys going and doing stuff rather than having stuff.

I'm the same. Miss him and my step dad at this time of year.

If I was buying for my Dad though I'd have got him something car related, a ridiculous pair of Christmas socks and hat, a framed photo of all his grandchildren and like Anna said - something he could do - a car show or driving day.

Likewise, and have had a new plaque made. Will be there next Sunday and then onto the family plot laying wreaths for grandparents, uncles, aunties and two nephews who have long gone but not forgotten x

I've bought my dad a few clothes that he wouldn't normally go for, as he's so conservative with money.

I know it shouldn't, but the second part of that sentence really tickled me.

I am getting to that stage where I am thinking it's gonna be the last one for either one of my olds so I tend not to wait to buy them gifts.

If I see something they might like, I get it and let them enjoy it there n then.

I bought mum a Moorcroft lamp earlier in the year which she loves. Dad likes getting taken out to a jazz night. Mum likes to be taken shopping for the day (in her words, without Dad moaning all the way round ).

My life is hectic enough, but I always find time to do this stuff cos it gives them things to look forward to and enjoy.

I always think it's a poor show when folks don't get to see their parents because 'I'm just too busy' (if they live locally that is).

We have renewed their joint membership at the national Trust as they really enjoyed using it this year.

A high speed micro sd card for his tablet and a new umbrella. I'm lucky that I live close enough to see my mum and dad every three weeks, so we still get to spend plenty of quality time together
