"what time roughly?? just off a 12 hr stint then on again tomorrow and cant be in bed too late! x"
the best time is after midnight because of the roatation of the earth, they make more of a flare then as the atmosphere is comming towards them, should be good this year because theres no moon |

between about 10.30 and 1200 is supposed to be the best...certainly here anyhow. and i have a clear sky thankfully. we are expected to see about 2 a second...whereas more populated areas will see about ten an hour

"At the risk of sounding stoopid - once i've looked 'up', am i looking north, south, east, west, or does it not matter?
"
You have to do what I keep doing... run from front bedroom to back bedroom to see what's happening out of each window. |

If i was to lay on your garden and look up, what are my chances of seeing a pussy? Just asking. |

"just a thought......what does a meteor shower look like...could someone describe it pleeeeeeze.......Ta muchly "
It sort of looks like me. It'll be walking towards you down your garden saying 'i'm a meteor and i've travelled a long way to meet you' as it pulls my Levis, i mean it's Levis off....

"Runs to other side of house, tripping over Tonka toy, stubbing toe and spilling drink...
...erm, nope, nothing here yet.
"
haha apart from a stain on the carpet and a twisted ankle?
I've just been out into the garden. Sky is clear but nothing apart from stars to be seen. Then the darkness spooked me and I ran back inside. |

just come on for more hot beverages. seen a total of 3 so far, one burned green...which i didnt expect!
i was thinking of this 2 a second thing and realised that applied to the whole sky...so i'm not going to expect seeing 2 a second!
they are quite beautiful and for the poster that asked, you will know one when you see it |

i think i'm numb...worse thing about a clear sky, it's darn cold!
saw nothing for 30 mins then 10 mins of zipping across the sky...was enough to satisfy me!
hard to believe that some of those bright lights are the size of a grain of sand...spectacular |

Up in Angus nr Forfar in Scotland - clear skies & from 12:00 we started to see about 1 a minute!
Really amazing
what I can't understand is that they go at all sorts of angles? Can anyone tell me why - I thoght they'd be all in the same direction!
Ps lots of satalites too!! |

Even though they are all coming from the same area of space their trajectory is determined by how the hit the Earth's atmosphere. Remember, the Earth is round and our atmosphere is round too.
Try this experiment, pour a pint of water over a football.
The water doesn't all run in the same direction does it? It will hit the ball at a certain point and the curve of the ball where the droplets of water hits it will determine their subsequent direction. |

An additional factor is our magnetic shield that extends some tens of thousands of miles out into space and protects us from solar radiation. It also protects us from the smaller meteors that cross our path but it does have an affect on their trajectory.
Google "earth's magentic field" for a page of images of it. |
