Not all dyes are fast in water so the colour could run, and some fabrics will shrink or distort or lose their finish if put in water.
You can get a sachet thing that you use with a tumble dryer to clean dry clean items at home.
Some manufacturers err on the side of caution and put dry clean only on items that could probably be washed carefully either by hand or on a gentle cycle, but you'd need some fabric knowledge to judge if you could. Or be prepared to take the risk of it getting ruined. |

I'd try it on a gentle wool wash and see if that works . I'm lucky my show jacket can be put in the machine (not an expensive 1 tho) |

Not all dry cleaners are equal. Some are specialists who will treat a wide variety of fabrics, some of them fragile and will use a wide variety of processes to do so. Many dry cleaners (most of the chain ones) have only a small variety of processes and won't handle fragile or unusual fabrics.
Google specialist dry cleaners for your area, look for ones that say they will handle leather (not just coats) sheepskin and vintage fabrics. At least you'll get the opinion of someone with a much wider knowledge.
As for the new t jacket - scotchguard! |

When it comes to clothes, I rarely buy anything that's dry clean only. But I was given a cardigan/shawl type thing that was dry clean only. I decided that if it can't stand the wash its not worth having. It obviously felt the pressure and didn't want to be chucked out, cos it survived the wash xD |

I got my daughter a couple of Disney Princess costumes a few years back and only after a couple of wears did I notice the label said dry clean only.
FFS kids dress up play clothes dry clean only!
Got bunged in the washing machine for years, they were fine. |
