My Christmas Gift to you...

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

With all the rampant commercialism that is rife with Christmas, we often forget that it is a time for giving.

So here is my gift to you...

Set me a task, anything you can think of (within the law obviously) and I will do my best to complete it before Christmas day.

Whether it is doing a good deed, doing something silly, whatever, I will give it a good go. If it is particularly challenging, I will extend it into the New Year.

You will get confirmation of the challenge being accepted, and a personalised update on how it went.

If I cannot complete a challenge for a very good reason I will donate £5 to a homeless persons charity.

Merry Christmas one and all!

Buy a coffee for a homeless person. Not much of a challenge but still a good deed and something nice. I'm sure they would appreciate a hot drink on a cold day. X

near derby.

When you're in a pay and display car park, look for someone who seems to need help and pay for their parking. Extra brownie points if it's a hospital car park! This is a great idea Mr M, if we all did one good thing like this we could make thousands of people happy. Big kisses to you

Find a homeless person. Take them to a charity shop, buy them something warm.

Take them to a proper cafe in their new warm clothes for some proper food.

Send me confirmation of costs and I'll cover it.

A few years back, I could easily have been that homeless person, at this time of year, it's too easy to forget how easy we have it.

Kudos to you sir.

there are some countries that you can have a coffee to go but you dont actually get a coffee, what they do is take the money and when a homeless person comes in, they get a free hot drink, great idea. Black fiday and thanks giving catches on but nothing like this which is sensible.

In the same vein of thought, in past years I have done the following at Xmas.

When out of work, have spent Xmas Day helping out at a local hospice or in the local hospital. Or signing on with the local Volunteering Centre and helping out over Xmas and New Year.

When in employment, buying a large Turkey and Xmas Pud and donating them to the local Salvation Army branch, or Elderly Day Centre to ensure those alone or vulnerable had a hot meal on Xmas Day.

There are always ways to help out, even if it is keeping an eye on an elderly neighbour.

A rucksack of essentials for someone homeless.

Some toothpaste and a new toothbrush, something cosy and something nice to eat. Maybe pop in a card and a small practical gift as I know from working with a homeless charity that they are often overlooked. (we used to wrap up gloves and hats)

What an amazing and uplifting thread - I take my hat off to you Mr Marmite. I've always loved marmite, think I love it just a little bit more now.

Some lovely suggestions too, I wonder how many of us have felt humbled by your suggestion - I know I have.

Just goes to show ...... sexual reprobates we might be but most of still have a caring heart

What a lovely lovely thread op. I won't set you a task as I feel that you have more than enough to be going on with

But I would like to set everyone a task ( who wants to accept it) and ask everyone to be mindful of others, if you see someone struggling help them, if your in your car driving let another car user out of a turning, hold doors open for others say thank you to others doing the same to you. Smile at random strangers, they could be having a bad day and a smile could make them feel better. And if you can afford it buy a homeless person lunch.

Paul and I live by the mantra above, Paul was brought up to be a proper gentleman so he naturally always helps other people even if it means he has to go out of his way to do it. I hate to see people suffering and I was homeless myself for just 4 weeks in my younger years so I remind my self how lucky I am now.

Oh I love the soup idea too im going to do that myself xx

Fair enough.... Get what you can while people are offering lol

Mr marmite, probably too late but maybe it should've been something you do and they either donate or they also do, double the love. And let's face it theyd be a lotta love if hot's challenge was repeated haha xx

This was a nice thread, good luck with your challenges xx

"With all the rampant commercialism that is rife with Christmas, we often forget that it is a time for giving.

Merry Christmas one and all!"

Your Xmas gift to me is reminding me that there are amazing humans in the world and giving me a lovely warm feeling reading this thread. Thank you what a good person!

Thank you!

I appreciate your sentiment, but I will leave it up to people to decide to either match the challenge, set a challenge or just ignore the thread and carry on with their lives.

However any challenges involving massaging ladies are welcome!

Seriously, it is just about me giving back to society in some small way. Thank you for the support!

London

I have Christmas off this year but some of my NHS colleagues aren't so lucky and we all do 13 hour shifts. That means they will be away from their families from early morning until late at night.

I'm teaching my grandchildren to pass it on and say thank you, last year, we took home made stuff to their local fire station and this year, I'll be taking them in to work with more nice things for the workers.

A card to your local hospital saying thanks from a random stranger would be amazing.

haven't got a challenge, but today I bought a sandwich for a homeless chap. he was so grateful bless him, he wished me a happy Christmas, what could I say back, but that I hoped he was ok for Christmas. I think I might buy him some warm socks or a hat n gloves and go seek him out in the next couple of weeks. thanks marmite for what u are doing, and stirring so many of us to actually do something for someone else in need

Marmite, i havent read em all so apologies if it's been done, but :

Make a big effort to regain contact with someone you've fallen out with, lost touch with. Sometimes they often feel the same way but don't know how to go about it. Worst you've to lose is your time/effort.

Merry Christmas y'all.

I have told everyone I will not be sending cards anymore and will instead donate card cost and postage to foodbanks and Salvation Army etc., ever reply has been very positive, am glad to say.

Going to also ask local supermarkets if they can have a " bin " for local foodbank so shoppers can pop something in it.

Merry Christmas Mr Marmite and may you receive happiness and good health for the coming new year. If you have time buy a small toy-Asda sell cheap versions of board games and toys under a fiver- and donate to a charity collecting for children's homes and poor families. I will do this too,we have donated food already

I'm impressed with Mr Marmite for doing this as well. I saw on the television recently a guy who had just got a job after 5 years and he said that one Christmas he went without food so he could buy his kids a present. Makes me angry that in this country in 2014, people are in such and worst positions.

Sorry.

I think St Mungo's still takes quilts. Some animal charities do too.

If people have coats then Wrap Up London 2014 is collecting and there are similar schemes in other towns and cities.

I hadn't see this thread until now. Giving is an all year activity and the need is constant but at this time of year when so much money gets spent on stuff then it's good to just give and remember that some don't have stuff to give.

OP, your challenge is to smile and say hello to everyone you see for a day. I will donate £50 each to three refuges for your smiles.

I think I do!!

How many challenges are you accepting OP? You're doing very well so far as are others who've said they will match your challenges or donate as well.

Love this thread!!

I'd say pick clothes you no longer wear (in the last month), take them personally to homeless people and ask if they need any particular clothing.

Or go through a drive through and pay for the car behind you as well and encourage them to do the same.

Op, we appreciate this is something that you wanted to do for others but in essence you've given so much more by inspiring and motivating others to do the same.

We don't want to challenge you, just to say thanks for reminding us there are many others a lot less fortunate.

We are going take a few of the ideas above and spread some good will x

Thanks OP

Well done OP. This is a very selfless and heartwarming thread and I admire you for it.

I sincerely hope that all those who have set challenges that involve you donating or raising money will also do the same, pound for pound. It's very easy to spend someone else's money while sat behind a keyboard!

It's not much but we took a tin of biscuits to the hospital today as a thank you for the fantastic care they took of my boy on weds. While we were there we helped decorate the kids waiting room to brighten the place up a bit.

Also I crocheted a blanket last week and donated it to a raffle to raise money for the local hospice

I have a busy weekend helping out serving Christmas Dinners in a Community Centre on Sunday so I won't update this until Monday.

Thank you to those spreading a little Christmas cheer on their way through too.

If you can spare a second to help someone else or spare a few quit for a collection tin, don't think too hard about it, just do it!

I have to chuckle at the thought of jars of marmite appearing in collection points though. I bought a few jars and have been dotting them around the local area!

I'm a bit concerned that these challenges are costing you a lot of money.

Any you can't do I would be happy to pay the £5 donation for.

And anyone who is wondering where they can make food bank donations to, most churches will have collections for needy people. My church does this. And they have people sleeping overnight in the worst weather to help out the local Shelters.

I stayed sober for two Christmas functions this year so far. Counts as a good deed by volunteering to drive. The money I would have drank is covering the challenges so I'm not really out of pocket.

Just bumping this so I can keep track.

Note - allowing a guy to give me a blowjob does not count as an act of kindness and will be declined

"With all the rampant commercialism that is rife with Christmas, we often forget that it is a time for giving.

Merry Christmas one and all!"

So,,,, how did the challenges go? Not seen any mention of miss_hotasfuks request ??

Donation to shelter in lieu of that one. Ten tasks were still outstanding on Christmas day so I donated £50 to shelter to compensate.

Thanks again for the support, suggestions and participation. I will do the same thing again Dec 15

Did you get to complete the other tasks?

I cooked for 9 homeless men at my church last night.

There is a group of places who open up during these coldest weeks for them to stay in overnight.

Smashing group of volunteers and guests.

I didn't get any others done but so far this year I have donated stuff to a womans refuge and carried out an indoor charity cycle ride.

I'm aiming to do at least one thing a month. Well done you though!
