Forget the word 'diet' it's often associated with eating very little.

There's eating well and there's eating poorly.

I have a bodybuilder in the family and she hates the word diet.

Stick with non processed, single ingredient foods which you can prepare from fresh yourself. Control your portion sizes, control what you put into your meals. Try to eat 6 small meals a day rather than the time old 3 larger ones.

You don't necessarily need a gym to lose weight, regular exercise can be as simple as walking to the shops instead of driving there, buying a bicycle, or chucking some trainers on and running round the block.

I avoid bread/pasta. I eat lots of protein as it's needed for muscles!! Have a look on my fitness pal if you input your info it'll give you a rough idea on how much Carb/protein/fat you should have each day

Indeed although I think that if you are doing a lot of exercise they are a bit stingy with the calories! I ground to a halt following the calorie recommendation on there as I wasn't eating enough.

What's your current stats first and what is your goal? You looking to lose body fat or you wanting to build muscle?

If you're looking to lose weight you need to create a deficit, make sure you're burning off more calories than you consume. Try an app like my fitness pal to log your daily calorie intake. For fat loss increase your protein and decrease your carbs, if you can eat the majority of your carbs before a work out that would be better. Avoid sugar because it's actually sugar that makes you fat not fat!

Weight training would help because muscle burns calories even when your resting.

It does take a while to seriously increase mass. You hear of people bulking up where they're eating 1000's of calories a day but are also in the gym 6x a week weight training.

Search the internet and get as much information as possible, find a simple 4 day split weights routine you can do in the gym and work out a weekly meal plan.

I'm doing high protein, low carbs, lost two stone since August with more to go. I've more or less given up alcohol too. Portion size is what's helped me a lot. Over time plate sizes have got bigger and bigger, we tend to fill them. I just use a smaller plate now instead. Sounds silly but it seems to work. Going to the gym at least twice a week has added to this plus cycling and using a pedometer to try to do as many steps as I can in a day. It's the little things that make the difference .

I'm sure it will be the way lots of people will start 2015.

To start with your goal should be fat loss. Once you've lost the fat then you can look at increasing muscle mass. Fat is like weetabix in a bowl, the longer you leave it the harder it is to get rid of!

What exercise are you doing currently? You need to work out how many calories to consume to put you in a deficit. If men can eat 2,500 a day drop this by 500, get the fitness pal app and honestly log everything you eat. Aim for an hours cardio a day, you've got quite a bit to lose. I'd read and read and read everything you can and write down meal plans.

You can lose a lot of weight just by controlling what you eat. If you give it a half arsed approach you're not gonna lose anything. You have to plan your meals and don't eat more calories than you can burn off.

My mass gain diet is focused of eating 1kg of chicken aday. I add some peppers and onions to it, yummie. In total I eat about 3000kcal, 270g protein and 200g carbs aday. I eat very low carbs cos I wanna keep my cut 6pack look year round.

I also got an exercise bike at home and I do 30min cardio on that on, usually under eastenders as its more fun lol

You need to drop body fat first and for that you need fewer calories.

Please don't expect a difference for christmas . Think of it as a lifetime plan . The habits that got you to where you are now need replacing with ones that allow you to be where you want to be . And it'll be a gradual process. I'm very doubtful that swimming is a good way to burn excess calories . I've never heard anyone say they lost weight and toned up due to punting up and down a pool .

You do go to the gym as well a lot tho ST. Anyone eating that as a normal diet would gain weight.

diet/what you eat, sleep and how you work out will be the biggest things.

im not really the biggest fan of diet i think its eating in moderation and not over indulging in anything. flexible dieting. this way you can have your cake and eat it. so to speak

like most said if your looking to tone or lose weight its about losing more calories than you put in

a lot of people seem to think if your trying to lose weight you must only do cardio and light weight. i find doing weights and cardio is the best thing. cardio side will have you losing weight. doing weight will help tone .

its about losing weight while maintaining strength.

Eat a balanced diet and watch the calories, avoid empty calories like sweets, alcohol etc, complex carbs are better, potatoes, Rice etc and drink lots of water.

Low fat diets are best because fat has lots of calories and is easily assimilated by the body. Chicken, fish are best.

Eating a low carb diet is a bad bad idea long term (ask Karen Carpenter among many others)its ok for a short while to cut up but disastrous long term.

Too much protein is a myth and will just give you expensive poo.

In short, a balanced low calorie diet. But even that is pointless without exercise.

And, it you have any health issues, or are taking medication, discuss it with your GP first.

Be careful with 'diet' food that is labelled low fat though as it's often loaded with tonnes of sugar! That's why eating no processed food like lean meat, fish, fruit and veg etc is the best way to go

Once you're on a "diet" you'll always be on a "diet". Otherwise you back to your original eating habits and gain weight again

Just reduce your calorie intake and exercise

As others have said,a balanced, healthy diet is key.Avoid processed foods, white bread, refined sugar, pastry etc,and eat as freshly as poss.

Lots of water,avoid fizzy drinks.

For bulking up you'll need plenty of protein, and if you can do it,6 small meals a day instead of the 3 traditional ones. Good luck.

If you're going to be successful you need to start reading and researching and get yourself educated on what foods you can eat. No good saying "is fish and veg a good diet" wedon't know what type of fish, the portion size, the veg. You have to work it out for yourself exactly how many calories you need to be eating per day. Roughly around 12 calories to each lb of your body weight to lose weight. Work it out then plan your meals accordingly. We can't lose the weight for you, you need to do it for yourself. It is hard work, if it wasn't hard work every single person would be in fantastic shape.

This is very true. I've had to chop and change what I eat even on a weekly basis depending on how much exercise I've been doing. When I dropped my calories too low and was exercising an hour every day I didn't lose any weight for a fortnight as I wasn't eating enough. Soon sorted that out nearly 2 stone off now in 3 months so it's going well
