Text 'speak' in messages
Jump to: Newest in thread
After having a day full of messages containing only one liners such as 'ow r u' 'im k' and 'gd gd' im really struggling to come to terms with my age!
Of course some words are far easier to shorten such as 'msgs' and 'ppl' and etc obviously. But messages containing only shortened words are really starting to grind my gears
Am I alone with my Victor Meldrew rant and need to move into the 21st Century with a more open mind to these or does anyone else want to join my club?
and be happy with old fashioned 'words'? |

The english language is a beautiful thing.. It should be used properly.. Text speak is just lazy in my opinion.. However the younger generation seem to use it so i think it is here to stay.A shame really |

"son; dad dad whats that
dad; its a book, here read it
son; wow! it like a text only longer and has whole words
we too are often bemused at text speak ....must be our ages..."
Thanks for confirming what I think and I am glad someone else is as bemused as I am sometimes why someone is in so much of a hurry that they have to shorten 'ok' to 'k' |

I adore the finery of a well crafted concoction of our gorgeous language. If its bastardised into little more than playground gang grunts I despair. My English is sometimes poor but I will desist from assaulting my payche with such trash. |

"If they suck cock and fuck good i 4 1 cudnt care hw they spell" somebody who can't be bothered to use whole words is unlikely to be able to develope sexual chemistry with anyone. It's a useful filter for people who prefer a human connection |

Some of us dinosaurs remember the 160 character sms limit before the days of smart phones. I believe twatter is limited to 140. Compression under those circumstances was useful but not mandatory.
I _iew it as a filter. The odd typo is inevitable. Writing messages only decipherable by a 14 year old or the enigma machine does nothing for me.
What disability would you suggest is indicated by the need to use text abbreviations? |

To be honest if the 'txt spk' is in a format I can actually decipher I have no problem.
If someone substitutes you for U and are for R for example I don't think that's too bad. |

So let me get this right, if someone sends a message with poor grammar it's a turn off if they use txt speech it's a turn off. So in order to get to meet people you must be a literacy genius. |

I tend to ignore people who use lots of text speak. There was one absolutely stunning guy who messaged me, but for me, a good use of English is a turn on.
I like a guy who uses long words but I say that with great trepidation because I stated that in my status once and had various guys send me "supercalifragilis.." Well you get the idea.
Something like 6 or 7 of them thought they were being original and funny. It was a bit depressing.
OMG. Am I a snob?
I'd hate to think I am simultaneously being politically incorrect. |

You never have to apologise for your preferences on here. It's not a job inter_iew . If I read a profile and I see they want to spar with wordsmiths. . I tend to move on. I know my limits and don't want to waste their time. In the same vein, if it's full of lazily proof read text or ranty, again I back away slowly. |

I am tall, slim, white, ugly, straight and a thousand and one other reasons so I have basically alienated 95% of my potential meets by being just me.
So me filtering on the basis of literacy is fair play. Literacy can be improved over time and with effort. As it is the only thing I ask for compared to the hoops I have to jump through, it isn't a lot.

I'm 20, do I count as the younger generation (of swingers!)? My brain hurts when people 'tlk lyk dis'. And my IQ drops 10 points just so I can decipher it. I won't reply to messages if they have been typed like that. I also dislike 'u' instead of 'you'! |

you just seem educated and intelligent.
for some of that is a huge turn on |

Every language progresses, we don't say thee and thou anymore and any one who's said "goodbye" any time is guilty of "text" speak of its day - it should be "god be with you". Other examples are available.
My point being, each new generation uses the language in their own way, to form an identity that represents them. |

Evolution is healthy, the addition of new words as appropriate can be a good thing. But the degradation of the written word and sacrificing the ability to converse in a coherent manner in the name of self expression is hardly progress.

That's exactly the point, it find it strange how the original poster says it's ok to shorten some words but not others, but how do words get shortened? It's because younger generations change things it's the way of the world. |

I agree with this, language does evolve. However, for me, anyone using text speak over the age of 25 or so is just bloody irritating. |

its not the shortening of the odd word, or the use of abbreviations that gets my goat, but a complete message without one solitary complete word included!
It doesnt strike me as progress with the use of language as previously defended on here, but a clear indication of either laziness or insincerity.
Either way,' ow r u m8' as an initial message to me will get an instant delete |
