I've taken a day off work as someone needed to be home today for when the contractor starts work installing our new drive way........surprise surprise, they haven't turned up!

I haven't phoned them yet to find out where they are, I'm far too angry.

We've been amazingly lucky. All of ours have turned up in the past 3 weeks. Maybe it's the thought of the Christmas money to be earned. Any other time this year it's been 'we'll definitely be there tomorrow'....................'maybe the day after'

Is finding an alternative contractor an option? I rarely give a second chance to someone. I'd rather pass the job to someone more reliable

It's unlikely we'd be able to find someone who could do the work this side of Christmas. The drive was instead of buying each other gifts. It's a job we wanted doing sooner rather than later, to make it safer for me getting my vespa out the garage. I've been struggling as we currently have gravel

Somewhere in North Norfolk

I've had building work going on for months and all sorts of problems with unreliable tradespeople.

Fortunately most have been excellent but in cases where you've had to book someone weeks ahead, being let down at the last minute can delay the whole project for 2 or 3 months.

The guy booked to do the tiling was the worst. We waited weeks for him to be able to fit the job in and then when he failed to turn up with no notice, then telling us he wouldn't be able to do it for another 8 weeks, it took 6 weeks to find someone else decent to do the job and wait for him to have time. Even then it only got done that fast because it was a one day job and he agreed to do it on a day he'd planned as a day off.

Speaking from a contractors point of view, are you paying the job on day rate or on a price for the whole job, it is annoying when trades turn up late and we fully understand that its not nice to have lost pay.

Hope the jobs finish well and on time

Titz Towers, North Notts

I'd be annoyed and looking to deduct the cost of a day off. It's the not knowing that is worst. If they were to phone up and say they are trapped in a greasy spoon café and won't be able to drive by their mate's without helping him get his Christmas stuff out the loft, so won't be at yours till dinner time, then you can relax and go out for a bit.

I have booked 5 different days off for 5 different joiners. None of whom turned up since July. Not one of them had the good manners to let me know. One finally turned up yesterday

As a contractor and not speaking of your job or you.

Some of the biggest cowboys are the customers they go out for six or seven quotes and then go for the cheapest and then wonder why they get a bad job.

We have seen it in our trade so often.

I never thought of that. Maybe I should have.

We got one quote, from a company which was recommended. The quote was very well priced and less than we were expecting so didn't bother getting anyone else in to quote, we booked them straight away.

We did similar with the new door we had fitted. Asked a local tradesman to quote for us, he then quoted for something entirely different and took three weeks to do it! We got a recommendation for a different company who gave a good price. They turned up on time and did a fantastic job.

We find word of mouth is usually the best way to find good trades people, sadly it seems to have not worked this time.

Fortunately not. We've not paid a penny up front. I'm always wary of anyone who wants paying before they start work

Don't be.

Its fair to ask for 50% upfront as often, 50% go on materials and the rest on labour and profit

Im talking from experience in work.

If I dont know you we have 50% upfront as a deposit, 50% on completion.

If you decide not to come back and collect your job/order we havent lost on it as much as we would of

Can handle them being late just as long as they let you know, it's when your left wondering and if they are going to turn up at all.

On private jobs, i am more than happy to let the customer pay all the material cost and have it delivered to them before we start, it gives them a sense of security that the materials are there and it saves us having to be concerned about turnover and the vat implications on refurbs as oppose to new build

we take a 35% deposit as materials are special for each job

We're a very small couple run company and we sometimes ask for 50% depending on the size of the job to cover the majority of the materials because we don't have the backing behind us to cover it.

+1 about the awful customers. The majority of ours are lovely and we enjoy working for them but there are a handful where you just want to bury your head in the sand and pretend you're not in lol
