I'm just back from the Vet, having made the choice to put my pet, loyal to the end down. The only reason for doing this was because she had RENAL problems and I thought it's the right thing to do.
My vet said with the advancement of drugs, we could prolong her life for a further year!
I'm very upset now, but feel I've done the right thing by curtailing her life, instead of prolonging it for my benefit.
Did I make the right choice?
A very upset Paddy xx

Oh that's so sad although you have to ask.... even if you prolonged her life for another year, what would the quality of that life have been? Would she have been happy 'hanging on' and would you have been able to bare the waiting?
Big hugs coming from me but I think you probably have made the right decision xxx |

yes, you certainly did. better to go now peacefully than prolong her pain. what you did was out of consideration for her needs, not yours xx |

i should think no one envies the choice you have had to make today.
As an animal lover i strongly believe that some medical improvements etc are not worth it in the long run.
No one can tell what pain and suffering an animal suffers just because we cannot bear to part with them for afew more years.
I think you have done what you believe to be best for you beloved pet and in your heart of hearts you know it. |

Faced the same dilemma a few years back with my Collie. It looked at me as the injection went in his leg and his eyes said it all. He looked so sad. I felt a right bastard. Never again. |

its not an easy thing to do and i'm speaking from experience as we had to put our dog down 2 yrs ago becauce of cancer.he was 13 so had a good innings but towards the end of his life he was in pain and his hind legs were failing him .we still miss him but have many pics of him around the house so he wont be forgotten .we did what was best for him but it didn't make me feel any better |

One of my cats had renal failure and he had to be put to sleep, the nurse couldn't hold her, I took him off her and he just led there looking at me, closed his eyes and just went.
Eventually the vet took him off me, I turned round walked out of the surgery, got in my car and burst into tears.
It's a difficult decision, but sometimes you just have to do ir.
Hugs to you |

hardest decision in the world my cat was 26 when she we had to put her down and it still upsets me to this day (nearly 10 years now)
Its terrible the decision we make when we get a pet because we know we are going to outlive them and the pain is a trade off for the pleasure they give us I know that i will never have a pet as wonderful as Princess Peritwinkle Squeak-Squeak but the pleasure she gave me makes it worthwhile |

I work in this profession. I too being an animal lover have been in your position recently too. Your pet cannot make the decision, only you as the owner can, unfortunately it is the saddest part of being a pet owner but the decision you made is the kindest one ever. Yes your pet could have lived relatively well for another year as veterinary procedures and drugs have came on in leaps and bounds, but you knew in your heart it was time to let go....please just remember the unconditional love your pet gave you over the years...and the happy times you shared. I had to do the same with our cat! She had feline aids (nick name) and we were told that it was necessary. Like you I feel bad! and have said never again..
I was speaking to someone from the Cats Protection League a few weeks ago and she told me that it is not necessary to put them down for that as they can live another five years with no symptoms other than a light appetite.. I feel even worse now!
To the OP.. You have to make that decision based on your evaluation, but I'll wager that you will feel like Wishy and I for a while yet... Not a nice club to join, eh? |

Medical advancement may be able to prolong life, however, it will not be forever, and one day, life will end.
What sort of quality of life will the animal get? Would it be happy to stay in bed and wiggle its tail for another year?
Would it be happy to have to rely on its owner to carry it outside to pee and to poo?
Would it be happy knowing it is a burden to its devoted owner?
I would not hesitate to end the suffering of any life if I truly believe he/she/it is better off dead, myself included.
My mum and I have already discussed how she would like to die, as she does not want to suffer etc...
