I don't follow the sport myself, but found this news very sad."

He was wearing an older style of helmet and when he turned his head to avoid the bouncer it struck him behind and under the ear. Such a sad loss to the game he was about to get his test place back. God knows how the bowler will cope.

Apparently (I can't watch gory stuff like that) he turned his back on a bouncer, & obviously there isn't as much protection on the back of the helmet.

The bowler is one of his best mates they played together at new south Wales, it's going to be a hard thing to get over for him,

Is there a way the ball can be made less dangerous ? It seems mad that something with a concrete core is thrown full chat at a person . I know it's a freak occurance but there are probably a lot of fairly nasty injuries every year in cricket |

Very sad news. A very unusual accident and injury, according to the accounts. He never regained consciousness. He died playing the sport he loved. We might all wish to go, doing something we love.
Also sad to see the inappropriate comments made on this thread. Shame. |

It's so sad, as he was only 25. People amaze me with their comments sometimes. I always feel sad when someone dies too young. The day we feel nothing for a death is the day we stop being human ! |

There are lots of injuries each year, mainly broken fingers and nasty bruises, when the ball hits you it hurts like hell. I am sure the rules will be looked at regarding bouncers but I suspect the game will move on with no change.
While totally tragic for all involved, Phil Hughes' family and the bowler, I hope they will take some small comfort in knowing that he died doing what he loved in a freak accident. |

While many of us may find the joke distasteful, the tirade of abuse levelled at the person who posted it leaves me sickened to say the least!

I read some of the earlier posts in there and have chosen not to read any more. I get no enjoyment from reading personal insults and abuse, no matter who it's directed at, or whatever perceived slight they may be guilty of |

Sadly it appears he was wearing an older style of helmet which doesn't come down so far and it appeared to strike him below the line of the helmet as he turned his back on it rather than take it on the grill. A freak accident as many others have pointed out. Hundreds of thousands of these deliveries have taken place since the inception of short pitched deliveries, without too much serious harm.
Sad news and a terrible day for all concerned.

A very sad day in the world of cricket it is a big loss to his family.
Its going to be very difficult for all the players in that tragic match to get over it.
Cricket will honor Phillip and give him the respect he deserved .

The word tragic gets chucked about too often in life but this is a time for it to be used.
Obviously it effects his nearest and dearest but it reaches much further more.
The poor lad that bowled the ball, his team mates, his opposistion, the umpires, anyone in the stadium. And then onto the youngsters who want to be just like Phil Hughes.

They thank the medical staff in it, I know they have been to see Sean Abott too (the bowler) to let him know he wasnt to blame for this accident. |

I learn today that the ball bust a vein in his neck that caused the bleeding and he had to have CPR but I thought he was sedated in ICU and he would pull through and survive.
It happened to Lendal Symmonds (I think) of the West Indies a few years back and he wasnt wearing a lid, he survived and made it back to the top of his game. |

Absolutely, I really feel for him. As a fast bowler, you're taught to be aggressive with your line and lengths..........even to aim to hit opponents in order to intimidate a batsmen into a mistake. To have this happen as a result of one of his deliveries must be horrendous for him to have to live with.
Out of tragedy, comes reforms though so maybe a more improved helmet design or a rule change on the height of a bouncer will come about.

Just read about this and a lot believe Sean Abbot my never play cricket again as he is beyond upset and currently with counsellors
The fact they were such close friends too is heartbreaking and I usually dont get upset but I did shed a few tears when I read the story!
Dissecting the artery causing a massive brain bleed is beyond a freak accident and I truly feel for his loved ones and friends at this time and I hope Sean recovers from this too and continues on in Phils honour |

I think we need to get things into context here. Millions of short balls have been bowled since the inception of short pitched bowling but apart from a few bust ribs, noses, cheekbones and fingers, we've never had anything like this. I also believe that there are only about 100 recorded incidences of arterial dissection since we started keeping records?
Sad as it is, his helmet was out of date anyway so I hope that apart from a few design changes to helmets & making it mandatory to wear the more modern ones, that there is no further fall out from this.
Cricket had already lost enough and it should be played in the manner it always has been, hard but fair. |

A sad loss to the game but a great sense of humanity in the respect given worldwide. Such dignity and support given by all. A tragedy which has been acknowledged in the best way one can think of. |

Class by Australia again.
a 63 second round of applause followed by a ton from David Warner, quite often his partner opening the batting.
You can see from his celebrations who it was dedicated to and then Micheal Clarke came down to his end to congratulate him and had a few words in his ear - its quite moving to see.
I cant bat for shit, you have to concentrate every ball. Its an achievement at the best of times but in this situation I think is a hell of a thing to do.
