No heating or hot water, is that a combi boiler or do you have a cylinder |

It is true....if you have a gas leak turning on a light switch can make it go boom.
Call them, they will give you the same advice and then they will send a man out |

That's a bit strong
OP just open a window and keep the space well ventilated. Call the emergency number and tell them they should said someone out straight away.
Personally i wouldn't leave it till the morning especially if its your main line in cause it doesn't tale much for the gas to build up and easily turn in to a dangerous situ |

She said it was a whiff of gas.
I'm presuming she's on natural gas, you need between 19 and 23 % gas by volume to get ignition.
At 19% you get more than a whiff.
I didn't say don't phone Transco I said don't panic.
That's my advise based on smelling a whiff of gas. |

If the smell is inside the house, do not turn any electrical appliances on or off, and If I were you' I'd not be waiting until the morning. It could be something and nothing but it could also be a leak. Just out of interest, the flu from your combi boiler isn't close by is it ? Sometimes when a combi fires up, there can be a very faint smell of gas from the flu ..

Just listen to Plum6er!
Call them out now! Either they will solve it or cut you off and then tomorrow your housing association will have to sort it. Either way it is free!
Mean time ventilate, switch nothing on or off, extinguish naked flamed etc.
Just because you have smelt it for a while does NOT make it safe!
Ex Housing Association Gas Engineer! |

So the main burner lights but you don't have hot water or heating, and you think it's a combi.
Your pumps fucked or your diverter valve.

Like I said don't panic.
Regulators wear and puff gas out a little more than they do new.
I've only been a gas engineer 25 fucking years what do I know.
When I started in 1986 the guy I worked under, was a brilliant engineer, smoked like 80 a day, open pipes running gas with a fag on, ahhh them were the days.

if it's a combi there should be a gauge showing pressure in the expansion vessel and a valve that you open to increase it, normally closed unless adjusting the pressure. If you can find the gauge that may give a clue. Too low and the boiler may not fire fully up... |

That's an open ended question, how much gas has come out, how close is ignition source.
I routinely smoke my head off while pouring diesel into machines. |
