I personally would like to say a big STUFF YOU to John Lewis....the Sainsburys ad has just blown you clean out of the water.
The British Legion inspired ad is beautiful and had me sobbing like an idiot.
You have to watch it |

It's moving very... Don't quote me! But I'm sure I've read somewhere that there is an element of truth, to the advert. I'm sure a truce was called, between the two sides, at some point one Christmas Day. I'm off to goggle. |

It commemorates the famous Christmas truce in 1914 in the first world war, due to the lines being less then 40 meters apart there was a lot of fraternities between English and Germans.
From Wikipedia it mentions that football matches were held between Germans and English (Germans won 3 - 2). Men had haircuts and shaves, as well as posing for pictures. Sadly the high command heard about this and put officers on a court Marshall, no officer got formally charged though. After that year the cease fire was made only to collect the dead and injured. |

I loved it. I can't see how people are slamming Sainsburys for using this amazing part of history for commercial gain though... They advertised ONE product and all profits from that product go to the British Legion. |

We saw it at the cinema today before watching The imitation game, both were excellent as far as we're concerned, the truce and football match is factually correct and Alan Turing was a genius whom we have a lot to thank for.

I won't watch it, I don't need sainsburys to tell me how bad the trench's were, and how nice humans are capable of being in the worst of circumstances. And I don't need to buy a chocolate bar to donate to the legion, most towns have a branch.
I'm sick of corporations telling me how to feel. |

Private Baldrick: [re: the 1914 Christmas truce] Remember the football match?
Captain Blackadder: Remember it - how could I forget it - I was *never* offside! I could not *believe* that decision! |
