I see it has landed safely on the comet.A huge congratulations to the boffins that got it there....BUT...... Why I don't see the point, I don't see its purpose.....with all that's going on in this world what difference is knowing the structure of ice on a comet 3 million miles away going to make...Does anyone really care? |

Its hoped that studying the dust and ice on the Comet will help scientists to understand more about our universe so they can then devise better ways to destroy it

There's a theory that water came to earth via a comet so they might be able to see if there's any evidence and other stuff. Maybe what they find out won be any use in the short term but maybe will be so in the future. Maybe they will be able to land a robot on an earth collision comet and turn it away so this shows that at least can be done. |

Have a look around the world and there's millions of shameful and pointless acts happening....This is amazing. ..we're furthering our understanding and pushing boundaries of exploration and maybe the chance to exploit space in the future. Exciting I think. |

Doing things like this help us advance and develop. I am sure someone said that developing the internet was a waste of time, money etc.
Now that the probe is communicating we will see if anything interesting is to be known about comets.

The Daily Mail confirmed that the money used on the comet should instead be used to fight the war on immigrants. Further stating that if the comet experiment is successful we may stumble across another planet with a similar environment to Earth but full of swingers. |

Apparently not as in today's metro the probe's touchdown was the front page lead story, but was overshadowed by a much bigger headline plugging a story on "Cheryl: I don't care what size my booty is". |

And where would we be today if it wasnt for exploration?
If people adopted that attitude centuries ago we would still believe the world is flat. Imagine someone saying to Christopher Columbus "dont bother going off in your ship mate its pointless save the money to pay cleaners to clear the shit off the streets here"
Study of space may seem a waste of time now but in the future it could save the human race, the sun is going to burn out at some point in the future therefore we need to explore to preserve future generations |

Seriously now, its a very important scientific and technical triumph! The scale of the numbers involved is mind blowing. I take my hat off to the hundreds of cardigan wearing propeller heads that have worked for years and years in a darkened office with complex computer algorithms flying around in their heads trying to work out how fuck they get their hole... sorry to get a little robotic probe onto a Rubber Duck flying at 40,000 mph millions of miles away in outer space!

In itself, it is a very impressive feat. What they achieved is equivalent to throwing a hammer in London, aiming to hit a nail in Mumbai, and actually succeeding.
Putting that aside, lots of things we enjoy today through science were not the aims of the research that brought them about. Penicillin, electricity, insulin, viagra, Velcro, the pacemaker, dynamite, radioactivity, the x-ray, quinine, the microwave, etc, etc.
All these were stumbled upon entirely by accident, when scientists were aiming for other outcomes.
So, who knows what could be stumbled upon by this very impressive scientific feat, which on the face of it might seem pointless but could potentially have immeasurably useful outcomes. |
