Went to my local newsagent this afternoon and there was a boy stood outside who looked about 10, with what looked like a large teddy bear wearing a t-shirt and Halloween mask sat on the floor, as I got to the door he shouts "penny for the guy?" Now I used to do this when I was young, my guy was made up of old clothes stuffed with newspaper and a plastic bag for a his with a face drawn on it, so, there was clear lack of effort on his part for a start, but what really got my back up is when I asked him what his teddy bear represented, he didn't know? So I asked where he got the idea from he said, his mates said it was a good way to make money
I thought when the 5th was upon us schools talked about the whole gunpowder plot thing and the symbolism of the "guy".
Are kids not told this these days? |

we were only talking about "penny for the Guy" yesterday and how you don't see it now. My mum wouldn't let us do it, she said it was begging but we always made a Guy.
I suspect that Guy Fawkes and his exploits are not on the curriculum but I'm sure that parents can tell their kids these things just as well. |

A V for Vendetta mask would have been far more appropriate
Voilà!
In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate.
This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished.
However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.

Unfortunately Halloween and Penny for the Guy seems to be just an excuse for kids to beg for money. People might criticise and call me a misery but I don't answer the door to them any more.
The outstretched hand and the look of disgust if you give them anything but money put me off. |

When I was a kid there was no such thing as Halloween well not what we celebrated. The big thing was penny for the guy, my sister and I where the only kids in our lane and with help would make a huge bonfire, we would make a guy and take it round the neighbours who gave us money towards fireworks then bonfire night we would light the bonfire with the guy on top and the neighbours would come to watch the fireworks and my mum would dish round baked potatoes and homemade sausage rolls. |

We always did penny for the guy... Made a very impressive one, outside the local shops... Brought our sparklers from the small amount we made., and the guy was put ontop of the bonfire in our garden every year.
We knew all about guy fawkes and what it was all about
Not seen it in years and don't think many kids know what bonfire night is about or that milk comes from cows not sainsburies! Lol) thats life! |

"Gun powder plot and treason...
The original conspiracy theory!
Never mind kids how many adults know anything of the plot without googling it?"
I've visited a few places in the midlands the plotters stayed and fought ...my daughter loves the tale and asks lots of questions which takes us further and deeper into it . |

Would it be a surprise to find out the tale of men plotting to blow up the monarchy and parliament has been banned from schools under anti terrorism laws? I think it would be classed as an exremist school these days!! |

I remember watching a documentary on the history channel about a jesuit priest called John gerard who was one of the few people to escape the tower of London.
he went on to write a book in which he purported that James had known and encouraged the plot for his purposes! |

If kids watch too much telly these days there was a documentary about Guy Fawkes on the other night. We were taught a rhyme at our school....Remember, remember the 5th November, gunpowder, treason and plot! |
