Andrew Lawrence - 'right-wing comedian'

Titz Towers, North Notts

Has anyone else been following this row?

He made some ill thought out comments regarding immigration, ethnic comedians, female comics and superannuated comedians appearing on BBC programmes.

He's since clarified his comments to say that he's not against immigrants, but is concerned about the numbers, by 'ethnic comedians' he meant those whose only routine is 'Hey! I'm from so and so and...', female comics relates to the BBC quota ensuring that almost any female comic can be a potential for airtime even if they aren't experienced enough or as developed as a male counterpart.

He's come in for a lot of flak, which is understandable, as his first article in Chortle (trade paper) came across as very unpleasant reading. He has been having a laugh on facebook about his right wing status, though, with posts such as 'up early to polish my collection of 3rd Reich memorabilia'.

He's gained a bit of support from Ukip, with Farrage tweeting in his favour. This lead to a great exchange with Frankie Boyle:

Farage: It's rare to find someone so honest in the media, particularly in comedy.

Boyle: There are a lot of honest people in comedy, which is why they keep calling you a cunt.

Farage: Probably the funniest thing I've ever heard you say!

and then Boyle: You didn't hear me say it you daft bastard

I've got to say I've followed all of this with interest. My facebook is full of it, as I've a few friends on there with similar interests. I've seen Lawrence a couple of times and found him entertaining. I disagree with him on immigration, as I think it makes Britain a nicer place. Female comics, I've seen good and bad and some could do with the exposure on telly. One note comedians, whether it be those who only talk about being from an immigrant family, or those whose material is just how life is for a Gay chap, or someone from Essex can be a bit repetitive. I do agree that there are some superannuated comics on BBC panel shows, as it does look to be a bit of a closed shop.

Frankie Boyle is booooring, thick and crude.

He's like Father Jack - he just swears.

Its easy to be controversial just by being rude.

Funny? Its a matter of taste - Bill Hicks, Dennis Leary - Rik Mayall - they're funny.

Is one of the first requirements of having a "sense of humour" in realising and accepting that everyone's tastes are different?

Nope, not even heard of Andrew Lawrence but it sounds unsurprising that the BBC dislike him.

He's done 3, maybe 4 series on the Home Service and has been on a few shows on the Beeb, which makes it a bit baffling.

Never heard of Andrew Lawrence and not followed this story. I did find the reaction to Mike Reads Ukip Calypso song recently and people being offended by it ridiculous though. Yet David Baddiel has done a comedy play called the Infidel about islamophobia and gets away with it? Comedy can come in many forms and what one person does'nt find funny, another person will. Katie Price got offended by comments Frankie Boyle made about her son a couple of years ago, where other people found it funny.

The recent ebola thread on here where one guy joked he thought he had ebola/man flu another case, some found it funny and others were offended.

Not really, but do think he looks like the lovechild of Timothy Claypole from Rentaghost!

I went to see him tonight in Leicester and it was a damn good night. His politics aside, he was funny and didn't do political jokes or anything off kilter

I used to find him funny and quirky and he was on my list of comedians I'd like to see. But those comments put me off him I'm afraid. He came across as bitter, petty, sexist and too right wing for me.

He didn't do himself any favours, but the clarification he issued on his statement seemed to clear a lot of it up.

The night was good as he didn't let the politics get in the way of the mirth

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I do like quirky comedians. I'd also like to see Tony Hall, Paul Foot, Simon Amstell, Kevin Bridges, Dave Gorman, Noel Fielding, Steve Hughes, Susan Calman, Sarah Pascoe and Aisling Bea.

Steve Hughes is excellent! I've not heard of Tony Hall, but I have seen Tony Law, who wasn't my cup of tea, although the rest of the room seemed to enjoy him. I saw Paul Foot divide a room last year, getting a huge cheer when he announced he would soon finish.
