You take someone out for dinner.
A tea set is something little girls play with.

Dinnertime is the evening meal you give your husband after a hard day's work. It has to be nutritious and filling. Tonight I have no idea what we're having as I no longer have a husband and my daughter is bringing it in after work |

If someone was to ask us out for tea I would expect to be sat in a tea shop eating cakes and delicacies.
If someone was to ask us out to dinner we would expect to go to a restaurant and haves proper meal. |

the easy going northerners are happy to accept the regional differences here and the op was all about who calls it what!
looks like there are a few that are proving that lots of southerners are incapable of realising that there is life north of the smoke |

where you got your school dinner lol, dinner and lunch are the same thing, school dinners are called that for a reason, what we pick up later because of where we live is neither here nor there, you are taught young that your lunch/dinner time is around midday, thats just the way it is, all the variations came later. |

anyway, we had home hade chunky veg soup! at 6pm tea time, I might take some in a flask to work tomorrow to eat for lunch at dinnertime, with my fingers |

I know there is life up there.
The real difference between using dinner for the midday meal instead of the evening meal is that servants had their main meal at lunchtime. They would be too busy serving the large dinner to rich in the evening and had a smaller meal (tea - although not cucumber sandwiches, I think) themselves prior to service. Everyone then had a small supper.

Anyone ever asked "are we having/ would you like fish and chips for tea" and simply end up with a cup/mug of hot brown liquid? No, i didn't think so.
