With the tragic news today the killing of the South African National football team captain Senzo Mayiwa by a couple of burglars who broke into his girlfriends home and shot him dead it brings home that not only just how dangerous South Africa is but what happened to Oscar Pistorius is not that far removed considering his circumstances..

I suspect the point the OP was making (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!) was that South Africans, like Americans often keep firearms on the premises in case of home invasions and burglaries. I saw this story the other day and there was no mention of whether Senzo Meyiwa was armed when he was shot by the burglars, but if he had been there's the chance that he'd be alive and they'd be dead - as, if he'd been disturbed at night and not fully awake - might be anyone else in the house.
Pistorious isn't unique in his situation.

This was in 2011 - and no idea what happened to the father as he wasn't a celebrity and there appears to have been no follow up reporting!
