Witches follow the religious practices of Wicca. They revere Nature and celebrate at special times like Solstices. Faith Healing and Reiki are similar but come from different cultures. Quite astounded recently to get an email from Amazon offering discounted Reiki training. Maybe they will be offering weddings and baptisms next. |

Witches don't have a national insurance number.
You can't practice Being a witch. To accept it, you have to accept evil and human blood on your hands. There is a such thing as a good witch... That good witch thing was just a scam |

its as complicated or as simple as you want to make it really. There isn't in my opinion, a definition as such.
Have a read around the subject on some of the web sites or buy a book but be a bit careful of sensationalists.

Witches come in all shapes and sizes, with a vast range of experience and interests. Steer clear of people talking 'evil and white' witches.
Just be yourself.
Yes you can 'practise'- either wicca , witchcraft or paganism.
Pagan federation site is good for info ( if it's still running! Years since I went on it...)

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum |
I used to practice witchcraft. Spells and potions and talismans and suchlike. I was interested in paganism but, unfortunately, some of the people I came across were complete wankers, and so slowly I have drifted away. I still have all my stuff though. I suspect some of its worth a few bob by now.
Being a witch is very practical - you have to actually do something witchlike, not just wear purple and a lot of jewellery. You know the moon phases, planetary positions, turning of the seasons. You know what plant kills and what plant cures. You know what planet rules what plant for your spells, and when the best time to cast that spell is. You know which colours correspond with what you want to achieve. You know magical alphabets. You know divination techniques and (an excellent Pratchett phrase) headology. Being psychic helps, but if that's all you do you're not a witch, you're a medium.
I could go on for hours but there are better sites to read. Witchvox, Pagan Federation, Children of Artemis, and so on. There's a lot of nonsense out there but if you read Marian Green or Doreen Valiente you'll get a good idea of modern witchcraft and what we get up to. |

Druids are pagans as they worship certain gods. Witches are sometimes pagan, but not always. There are witches within all religions, even Catholicism. |

Tell me, what do you do with witches?
Burn them!
And what do you burn, apart from witches?
Wood!
So why do witches burn?
'Cause they're made of wood?
How do we tell if she is made of wood? Build a bridge out of her.
But can you not also make bridges out of stone?
Oh, yeah.
Does wood sink in water?
No, it floats.
Throw her into the pond!
What also floats in water?
A duck!
Exactly.
So, logically--
If she weighs the same as a duck...
she's made of wood.
And therefore?
A witch!
Seems fair enough to me. |

I am far from ignorant, a mostly lapsed pagan practitioner, schooled in many non Christian belief systems including Santería and both modern English forms of Wicca, I believe the Santería is closer to the form you are referring too. But you over generalise, you may as well say there are no good priests only molesters.
Good and Evil are very difficult terms to quantify, Wicca mostly teaches personal responsibility instead, often a much more difficult path, but other than the hippy trippy fluffy bunny witches talked about in the press and popular culture as white there are many real witches who don't mean you any harm. |

I appreciate your point of view and I realise you must be basing it on something but witch is a generic name used to describe a multitude of practices.
Being a witch isn't bad, energy can be used to heal & nurture, it's the person who is being the "witch" (if that's what you choose to call it) that can be good, bad or somewhere in between.
The majority of people/witches would never dream of hurting anyone.

Someone who knowingly and wilfully either withholds nurture & love or wilfully uses their force to inflict insidious mental, physical, emotional or spiritual pain or distress on innocent parties or another individual. There's more of a focus at this time of year, but if you dial the spiritworld, better do your homework.

Too many to go into, but generally someone who observes and learns and is not frightened. It's not something to do without knowledge but then again nor is boiling a kettle. |

"Witches don't have a national insurance number.
You can't practice Being a witch. To accept it, you have to accept evil and human blood on your hands. There is a such thing as a good witch... That good witch thing was just a scam
You dont happen to work for the inquisition do you?
It's the right time of year for them, they love a good bonfire lol.
Dx
I'm guessing that was suppose to be funny.
There is no such thing as a good witch.
So are all witches bad or evil?
Because to believe in one you have to believe in the opposite. Hence why all religions with a God also have a Devil.
Duality, it's there in everything.
Good, bad, feminine, masculine, light , dark, god/goddess , devil/demon.
You can't have one without the other.
Lol yep... There are good killers and killers too I guess. There must be good vampires too. I see your logic lol
Love
Dx In our culture yes , I agree .
Other cultures and meanings surrounding witches and witchcraft are interpretated in different ways ( some in extream ways with beliefs that are very real to them)
Genuinely interested, where would Shamans etc fall into in other cultures opinions? I would think of them as spiritual leaders, healers, givers of medicine & wise people, or would they be classed as witches?
Really interesting
Dx" there is good and bad in everything... And peoples perspectives and interpretations are always going to be different too... For example ... Witches here, on one level are those that wear pointy hats , false noses and stick on ta chin warts! And fly on broomsticks lol others can look at us and think WTF?! and we too could look at others who really believe in stuff that to us may seem crazy!! Who is right tho? Do make you think |

"isn't the broom stick a reference to astral projection?
some think it's that and some think it comes from using sticks to apply hallucinogenic drugs in ointment form to the genital area."
hmmmm, intriguing. |

Wicca is a pseudo-religion invented by a rich bloke in the 1950's. Its basis in history is highly questionable because so very few documents or practices got by the Romans after their decimation of the druids. IMO, it's as real as any religion |

The Revd Dr William Stukeley believed that these pre-Roman sites had been built by 'Celts', led by their priests, the Druids. Mixing speculation with evidence from ancient texts, he concluded that the Celts were originally Phoenician colonists, who had 'civilized' Britain long before the Romans arrived. Stukeley painted a romantic but fictitious vision of the Druids worshipping at Stonehenge that has lasted to the present day. |

Think of it like reconstructing a dead language, you have a few fragments to start off with, then you scout round the known world for similar patterns and phrases, and fill in the gaps like a jigsaw without the original picture, you get the best picture you can but it may or may not be the right one... who knows, most people who practice some form of paganism will study many forms and make their own version. hopefully they will never become too organised otherwise it will just be yet another bloody belief system that can be peddled as opiate for the masses. |

Nobody knows what Stonehenge was supposed to be, they spent so long getting the scaffolding up they never got round to building it! but yes you can find many churches built on holy sites that make no sense in Christian terms, and the Celts were an extremely impressive empire long before the Romans, they just were not organised in the same way, and didn't have a written language. instead of warfare they used the move in and breed technique still practised to this day by the Irish in America |

love the fact that all the local churches to me have Yew trees in their grounds, a living link to pre christian history. Many of which predate the chapel they are next to. |

Bloody hope not. The original druids practiced human sacrifice. Although some old fashioned ways could come in useful... |

Well in my view they're as valid as religions - and there's no such thing as a good one of those or a genuine God - or Dog - if you're Onny. How many religions have 'blood on their hands'?That's not meant to be funny by the way. Saves you the guess work.

? You don't seem to have paid any attention at all to a number of posts. Preferring to stick to only YOUR view. There are other viewpoints in the world. |
