You want our government to help people who went out to support people that have been beheading aid workers?
I hope they don't help them. They made a choice to go |

We said this before. When shit hits the fan, they'd come to their senses. But, people been telling them for a long time not to go and what would be the repercussions. It's not all a bed of roses as they thought it was going to be.

I think there are better things our government could spend money on. Like the people in need that didn't leave to fight, maim and murder as part of an extremist group. |

"Wonder why they want to come home "
I suspect that from your nice comfortable home in suburbia being a revolutionary seems far more appealing then when you are in a warzone seeing people next to you be killed.
And they are quite literally fucked, because from what I've read, as brutal as the beheadings are, there are far worse and prolonged death's at the hand of IS.

Unless you are for ISIL you are, by default, against it and, therefore, a non-believer in their particular interpretation of the Quran.
That makes you a kafir (kuffar) and they are likely to kill you if you are male and rape and kill, or 'liberate' you if you are female.
ISIL takes a particularly dim _iew on desertion.
Passports are removed or destroyed when you 'enlist', and life expectancy of travel jihadists is generally low as they are used as vanguard troops.
Deciding that it's not for you is unlikely to get your Passport returned and absenting yourself is likely to result in a whole barrel of laughs when your erstwhile companions catch-up with you. |

They went out there presumably to overthrow the Syrian government, I don't really understand why but that was what western governments wanted at the time.
ISIS was a well organised force and they probably joined thinking they were overthrowing the government, but then the rules changed.
Unfortunately once in an army you follow the orders given desertion in war is still firing squad penalty in the UK army so no reason to think it would be any different in ISIS.
No matter how good the intentions were on leaving the UK they are now between a rock and a hard place with no way out, unless ISIS win or lose and peace returns. |

Oh well life sucks for them but then didn't they expect there was a chance they would die ISIS are not simply terrorists, Muslim fundimentalists or extremists they are also a cult and cults are notoriously hard to leave. ISIS are so extrieme they even fight against other jihadists!
If it all wasn't so serious I would liken then to the religeous groups in the life of Brian. |

I think it is sad that being young, stupid/misguided leads to death. Those from this country that went out to help Franco in the Spanish Civil War were able to come back.
The threat levels here are different, I understand that, but being young and malleable doesn't equate to being evil in my head. It does send a message back to those that are thinking of going. Unfortunately, I fear that one of the consequences will be to push the radicalised, daft youth, to concentrate on terror here rather than over there.
I find it sad that so many people are being killed for factional wars about ideology.
I feel for their poor families too. |

I'm not saying there shouldn't be consequences but I think the question of right and wrong is a difficult one.
Some will have gone out when Cameron was pressing for us to support what has now morphed into ISIL. Some will have gone because their coolest (in their eyes) mate convinced them. And, yes, some will have gone with real hatred and anger in their hearts.

Hence the trial. Although personally I feel that the ones that went out there after the hostage beheadings started and indeed the piece of work that carried out the beheadings should be left to their fate. There's fighting for a cause and there's committing genocide and this conflict has morphed from one to another. |

Thing is the knee jerk reaction is to let them stew.
But to fight against ISIS we need intelligence, nothing better than a disenchanted terrorist, especially if they don't co-operate you can throw them in jail.
Trouble is war is glamorous from far away, people do stupid things when they're young, our government doesn't negotiate with terrorists directly, but they do negotiate.
This is a one for the experts, if they want to come back, then they have to give us something. Jihad John for a start. |

I do think those that went out after the beheadings started and were publicised should be treated differently but I would never wish death on anyone except myself. An eye for an eye just leads to more eyes being lost.

There is a somewhat satisfying sense of 'completeness' insofar as those who went to kill those who don't believe may themselves be killed for not believing enough. Perhaps others may not be so hasty to judge others' beliefs. |

Ideally a perfect situation would be for them to return and spread the news that it aint Xbox360 territory and it aint glorious.
In reality......
Dead man walking......
They just might not truly realise it yet. SO sad. I feel sorry for the families and friends who could see beyond the brainwashing. Ive seen the results of such brainwashing and it isnt clean.
Not nice. Brutal. Life and death.

we have armed all these groups. Time for the leaders in the west to explain the mess they've caused. |

Good post.
People should cast their minds back into the recent past when Assad was allegedly using chemical weapons on his own people. Cameron did everything he could to take us to war in support of the 'rebels'.
Many in the media and lots of the voices on here backed him. There was huge support for the 'we need to do something' camp.
When the government was defeated in the commons vote Cameron and many of his supporters made clear their belief that a mistake had been made but that they would find other ways in which to support the rebels. The USA was even more explicit in their decision to arm the rebels.
We know today that the most organised of these rebels has morphed into ISIL.
Some of these youths who have been caught up in this mess originally wanted to do exactly what Cameron wanted to do and if a vote had gone differently would be fighting with our troops.
There is a clear distinction between those who went then and those who have joined ISIL recently.
It is not always as simple as those wanting to sell newspapers to the (at times) easily led masses would have you believe. |
