Does anyone think it is time to change the system in General Elections so that every Really Counts ? As I'm pretty sure a Consrvitive vote in Livepool is a waste as is a Labour one in say Windsor ? Why not make it if you get Ten per cent of the national vote you get ten per cent of the Seats ! Simples ie 500 seats in parliament equals fifty Seats ! At the moment that probably wouldn't get you any ! How can that be Right ! Thoughts please

Are people in individual areas not to be allowed to choose the MP they think will be best for them then?

How will it be decided which MP gets which constituency?

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

I think there was a Commons vote about this a few years ago. Surprisingly the two main parties voted against it. (sarcasm)

Why would a ruling party give up the very reason it's ruling? Never gonna happen.

Sorry x yes I will try . A lot of costituancy work mp s are meant to do could be done by your local councillor . But what I would suggest would be that each party delegate its maps to an area , that way everyone in an area would have representation from the party they voted for .

The problem with this is each party would draw up a list of its prospective MPs in a priority order. I Cameron and Milliband would be top of their prospective lists.

So any unscruplous or unpopular MP would have a much better chance of being re-elected. At the moment at least an unpopular MP can be defeated in their local constituency in the election (Portillo, for example in 97). Also in extreme cases a local party association can deselect an MP so that they cant restand.

what you really mean is, can we do things the Scottish way

Holyrood elections use a mix of first past the post to elect constituency MSP's and proportional representation from regional lists.

As stated above, it was put to a referendum and rejected by the electorate.

As a footnote, Clegg, in a fit of pique, then ratted on his promise to support the long overdue boundary changes.

P R wasn't put to a vote ! It was a fudged system that was offered , I'd like ten percent of Vote equals ten per cent of power ! How can that be Wrong ?

No - Clegg back tracked on the boundary changes because he didn't get his way on House of Lords reform.

Because it decreases the chance of anyone actually having control and we would end up with a succession of coalition governments with nothing positive being achieved.
