if you dont like the question, apologies - now jog on to one of the million other threads here.

as for the word 'coloured', miss CC, you should get with the times. obviously i'm white, so no expert - but if you care to do more than shoot your mouth off, you will find that the current vogue is 'of colour'.

thanks mr fucktographer, for not jumping on the bandwagon.

You use the word coloured in your first post.

so, in your world, what does 'people of colour' mean?

"

There IS a difference between using a term (coloureds in this case) that was used to describe a class of people, and using people of colour.

Henry Louis Gates Jr wrote a great book about 15 years ago, Coloured People. Read it if you want a good understanding of what the word meant back in the 40s and what it came to mean.

As to your OP, the answer is yes.

White is a very broad term too,

doesnt always get taken into account...

E.g. Swedish and Romanian are sliiightly different... A Ginger Scot and an Italian Goddess are also different.

Isnt diversity wonderful?

I wonder what beauties are under burkhas, one can just daydream...

My personal favourite is when something racist is said in a generalised way and followed with, not you though.

However, OP, you have apologised and I can see that you have become confused with the different terminologies in use. Take the information here and follow the advice not to call us coloured.

That is the argument Gates Jr makes in his book. If everyone is called coloured, regardless of race, then the world can move on. However, that is not how the word is and has been used.

The SA classifications of Black, Coloured and White also adds a status to the terms.

I agree. I grew up in Hackney, a very racially mixed borough now and back then. I didn't experience real racism until I was 17. It came as real shock to me as the white people I had met until then were not racist. I have white cousins too and it didn't enter my head that people would see and treat me as different.

I worry when I see language and behaviour return to what was the less tolerant norm and I hope that we as a British nation of all ethnicities don't buy into hating people for their colour.

Imagine a world where all white people were called "pale faces" "foreign devils" "ghosts" for centuries, throw in historical repression, slavery and genocide and you then begin to appreciate that coloured is not just a word, its a symbol of being treated badly. You may want it but whether you get it depends on how long you want to extend the thread.

And breath people

Anyone else noticed that it's the 'white' people who get more twisted and offended about this subject than the 'black, Asian, coloured' ever do

You know i've met people on here who (as weird or daft as it may sound) have always wanted to meet a brown man. Now, i don't take offence by that. Not sure if it''s because i'm quite laid back or because everyone is on here to try different things and fulfill all sorts of fantasies.

I'm just glad to be of help.

Mind you. It's not all a bundle of laughs. I get my fair share of racial abuse too. But, it makes me laugh - why? Have you seen my tongue? It does wonders.

"Coloured is a horrible word to describe somebody.

does not make someone racist thought just because they make a bad choice of wording, someone may choose to use the word coloured with the best intentions because they may believe it's the most suitable word to use while others may not agree, political correctness has gone a bit nuts in my opinon "

Between the wording and regarding people as a sexual tick list most people would have the sense to realise this wouldn't be a popular thread. Still, the OP has apologised, despite continuing to be defensive.

Hopefully, at the very least he'll have learned to keep certain views to himself in future.

To answer the question, I fuck people I am attracted to, not to tick them off some kind of sexual to do list.

I don't think many do.

I used to use coloured in the mistaken belief it was less offensive than black. I am glad I know better now. I was very sorry that I'd offended anyone when I found out the actual connotations of the term.

I'd never have tried to justify using the word by claiming that "coloured" is fundamentally the same thing as "people of colour".

That word is offensive to many because of it's inherent link to apartheid. The Op used it out of ignorance simply because no one had educated him that some find it offensive. I for one accept his apology.

He also uses the word 'oriental' this is equally offensive to some Asian peoples. Why hasn't that recieved similar outcry, is it because of the ignorance of other contributors to the thread?

We are all ignorant until educated on certain issues. Anyone willing to learn, change and offer a genuine apology for their ignorance should always be applauded. Many are ignorant and choose to remain so.

Perhaps there's some kind of guilt there over how black people were treated in the past.

The OP (who I am, possibly incorrectly, thinking is white) doesn't seem bothered about it but some white people don't want to see more of the same.

I also think it's possible that some people, (not necessarily just those "of colour"), are so used to casual racism or marginalisation that they let it pass. Otherwise they'd constantly be arguing with people. Taking the high road and forgiving some their ignorance or foolishness probably makes for a calmer life.

Of course, intentional abuse is something totally different, as it should be.
