And then what will they do in Scunthorpe

local news today, they are going to build 6.000 new homes in Scunthorpe, this will create 3.000 jobs.
but Scunthorpe is already on its arse job wise with the steel plant all but closed, so when the houses are built, the 3.000 jobs will no longer exist but there will be 6.000 familys moving in with no job prospects plus the 3.000 or so that are now out of work after the build has ended.
we need the homes for people i admit, but is it just going to add to the unemployment in the area??
so is this a good thing or not??

I think this is a typical example of news being presented in an easily digested and acceptable format. Fortunately people like you look beyond what is put in front of them and question it. Have they included plans for extra doctors surgeries, school places, dentists and infrastructure? |

If you build a large enough housing project it creates other things that lead to jobs.
Shops appear. A school may be needed. There will be incentives offered to business to locate near a new workforce.
It doesn't always work but it can with proper master planning. |

Scunthorpe is a town dying on its arse. Since the first sell off of the steel works the town has consistently gone downhill. The town centre is a collection of kebab and chicken shops with very few named brands there anymore. Most have relocated to parks out of town. Consistant bad planning and unnecessary spending of public money has left a town with little to attract local business.
I grew up in Scunthorpe and have fond memories of the town. It just doesn't resemble the town I loved when I visit home now. |

I don't see what it will achieve. They will be out of price range for people already living in the area and the area doesn't really attract new families.
That said the new(er) estate on the Morrsions/Ashby Ville build seems to have filled up. |
