Another post reminded me of my second rant for tonight
I will refuse for as long as I can to use the self checkouts; for one they take away jobs, also they put the onus of scanning and packing onto us the customers.
When I pointed this out to one of the shop assistants at Tesco the other day she told me that no jobs would be lost in the long term. I asked her how she knew this and the answer was : Because they told me and they trained me to help customers on the self-checkouts!!
Am I alone in thinking this is a bit short-sighted? |

how does that work out??
they have 1 assistant to help at the self service checkouts - in my tescos there are 8 of them.
if they were normal checkout they woud have an assistant at each so thats 7 jobs gone surely
dont quote me - took me 3 attempts to get my GCSE maths |

At our tescos (extra, Cambridge) there seems to be 1 staff assigned to 3 self-service checkouts so clearly there is a possibility of 3 less employees. Of course they might just be doing something else.
But you know... self service. I don't think I ever got through it, in any shop, without needing an assistant to "help". |

I prefer the self service checkouts.
Yes I see the argument over the jobs etc. But it prevents me having to deal with inevitable 'nice weather we're having', 'going on holiday this year?' or the worse 'ewwww do you know sushi is raw fish' comments.
The self service, also enables me to put Krispy Creme donuts through for 29p instead of £1.45!!!!! |

The only time i use them is when they pratically frog march me through and do it themselves. As for jobs, the employees at the one here tend to do everything from be on the tills, meet and greet and even security and showing you to the tills so as far as i can see they are only moving them around not getting rid of the staff. In fact there seems to be more and more staff rather than less |

Totally agree with you...they are only designed to cut staffing so I wont use them. |

I think that's funny - but I'd be careful if I were you. They have cctv trained on those things. They're really looking for people stealing the high value stuff - booze, nappies, coffee, razor blades, condoms (yes really). But Tesco are so penny-pinching the manager would shop you for trying to steal the steam off his piss.
If you're in Southend why not try the Waitrose down towards Shoebury? You meet a better class of shoplifter down there... |

No staff on till ,if you go in early or late you have to end up using them don’t like using them think it will lead to job cuts ,what’s that mean to Tesco , less staff more profit. |

The space taken up by the 4 self-checkouts at my local Tesco could be replaced with a single normal checkout and therefore only one member of staff would be employed to use it.
Seeing as they always have a member of staff there to check what you are doing and helping out with any problems then saying it means less staff are employed isn't quite correct.
I use them all the time when I only have a few items to pay for and it saves a lot of time standing in a Q behind somebody with a full trolley load! |

100% agreed.
Only issue with self-service is that everything has to be weighed as going in the bag otherwise you get "unexpected item in the bagging area" |

No, you are not alone. I agree with you on this.
However, i note that some of the larger stores now have their own Tesco's opticians in them, so help is at hand.
Ever notive how times change? Self service had a different connotation in my youth |

Another thing about it that annoys me is.........if we're having to do the job of Checkout Operator why don't we get remuneration for it?
They also have automated book in - book out at the Library.
We refuse to use it because it's already cost one Librarian.
I can see automated bars in pubs soon with just a couple of bouncers on patrol!

"soon they will bring out self service hookers.
where you line up and do it yourself with a spoty youth looking on in case you need 'a hand'"
Reminds me of the appointment at the hozzie for a post-vasectomy check.
"you need to bring a fresh sample of ejaculateto hospital, within one hour of production.
If you need help please contact Nurse ......"
Boy, was i disappointed. |

I like them, if im in my lunchbreak at work, i can nip through them no problem. The only ones i refuse to use are the ones Morrisons have as they are so flipping patronising, "please put the item in the bag" after i scan every time, what do they think we are, thick or stupid, ffs
On the jobs front though, that does make sense as Asda in Gloucester has 2 lots, potentially 16 jobs done by 3 people |

But can they fit another 16 checkouts in the space? Or maybe just the 3? |

I don't use them as i trust the checkout operator more than a bloody machine.
And why is it there's some member of staff shouting to use the machines. If i wanted to use it i would not be waiting in a queue for the checkout operator!

Having 8 self-checkouts (for example) with 1 assistant does not equate to 7 less people being employed…. unless you assume all the checkouts would be open all of the time… when do you ever see all of the checkouts open (Christmas and peak Saturday – if you are lucky)
If you have 8 self-checkouts they take the space of less than 8 assisted checkouts, that’s less than 8 assisted checkouts which would not necessarily be in operation 24/7 (minus the reduced trading on a Sunday). The self-checkouts are always supported.
Supermarkets will not pay people to sit at checkouts just in case there is an increased flow of customers. Self checkouts assist in increasing the volume, pace and flow through the checkouts (the customer’s most frequent complaint being how long you have to wait to pay) without the need to increase staffing hours.

Its all immaterial anyway. Within 10 years al packaging with have rf chips in them and you will just push your trolly between a gap and it will sum up the total instantly and you can pay with your card.
I fail to see why people get so hung up over progress. Maybe we should still have the man with a flag walking in front of a car. Or hand harvesting good. |

I love self checkouts and would rather go through those if I only have a basket
Do you remember a few years some supermarkets were doing that self scan shopping where you took a terminal around with you scanning all your shopping and then you just paid at the end, great until your trolley was picked for a random check and then it was all taken out rescanned and you had to pack it all up again, that idea did'nt last long |

lol i found my self arguing with the self service machine yesterday at morrisons... it kept saying in its really anonoying voice" please place the item in the bagging area" i did. it repeated again " please place the item in the bagging area" i lifted the item ( cotton wool) and put it down.. it repeated.." please place the item in the bagging area" i lifted it up put it down harder, " please place the item in the bagging area" this time i shouted at it... "its there , its cotton wool for christs sake. it dont weigh much.". to which it replyed.. " please place the item in the bagging area" the spoty youth was chatting up a young female customer and didnt even blink. i tried again. " please place the item in the bagging area" so i put the bread rolls i had brought to shut it up.. to which it replyed." unexpected item in the bagging area" " NO SHIT SHERLOCK..." Spoty young finally stops flirting and comes over and sorts it.. and had the nerve to tell me i had done it wrong... grrrrr .... |

I used to hate them for the same reason as many on here- a real faff getting stuff to scan and I thought I was doing someone out of a job.
Now I just use them. Besides I get to double up on my plastic bags without getting a lecture off the lady on the till.
Only kidding I'm a big recycler really! |

Of course they weren't designed for adults. My child used to play for hours pretending to scan good when we got home from the supermarket, despite being a teen now he still loves these machines from hell |
