Had a fascinating insight into how we (as humans) create the worlds that we feel comfortable in. We all adopt a technique of "Generalisation, distortion and deletion" to create a world that is significantly impoverished from the real world but is one that makes us feel comfortable. We also feel threatened when others challenge the world that we have created and the size of the world is often directly proportional to our own ambitions.
At 50+ years old I found this concept fascinating and wondered if anyone else had such a eureka moment or indeed an opinion about it? |

Bloody hell that's deep for Saturday lunchtime.
I would agree. it also explains the appeal of social media.
I think people like to live within a sphere of what they're comfortable in. Once that sphere is stretched it becomes more difficult. Some people's sphere is wider than others so that's where conflict occurs.
I always say that it's the actions of other people that have an influence on your life and most things aren't actually down to 'luck'.

Think about yourself and people that you know and think about their beliefs and their world and then challenge it by suggesting something that is true but which does not fit in with their world.
Current example......
"That footballer who has just been released from prison just goes to show how rotten and corrupt footballers are." .... Does it?
Generalisation - all footballers are not rotten and corrupt and the 99% who play outside of the top flight do it for the love of the game.
Distortion - one footballer now represents all footballers
Deletion - ignoring the charitable work that many footballers do and not forgetting the great pleasure that the game gives to millions.
You can apply the same examination to so many comments that you see in the lounge.
This country is flooded with immigrants and it costs us dearly.
Single men are really all married men
Etc etc... |
