MP3 player recommendations

I have finally decided to get an MP3 player, so I dont cart dozens of CDs around in the car.
Can anyone recommend a decent one. I do not want to buy any Apple product, so iPods are a definate NO.

If you don't want to go down the iPod route your best bet will be a Sony Walkman.
No - not an 80's one - the new generation. But they're shockingly expensive!
Pre my iPod days I had a Creative Zen - lasted two years before dying and since then I've had an iPod Classic. Hasn't entire collection on it and still not half full. And most of it (98%) hasn't been downloaded from iTunes either!

The iPod classic will hold 160g of mp3's so plenty of room for even the most vast music collection.
They are robust and sturdy and they can connect to most speakers. In fact I can't think of any that they can't connect to. Reasonably priced as well. |

Creative Zen.
Had mine for several years now. Pretty much used daily.
Plugs provided are usually good quality too.
Previous poster said he had problems. Never have. And I'm sure they are much improved. |

What phone have you got in the drawer? Your last phone cleared of apps with the memory loaded with mp3's plugged into your car stereo will do the job perfectly.
I use an old 32gb iPhone as the MP3 player on my bike. We use our current phone as players in the car as we are carrying them anyway. |

I had a Creative Zen and it was amazing. I now have a little Sony Walkman, but I am also in the market for a new player as well.
If iTunes is your gripe with Apple products, do remember that with some (older) products, you can transfer music without using iTunes.
I'm thinking of getting a 160gb iPod classic and I know i can use my preferred media manager with that and it works a treat. |

I also used to have a Creative Zen, excellent in all respects except it didn't support bluetooth, my crash helmet and our new car have bluetooth pickup buit in so old phones were the cheapest available answer as we already had them. |

dont think the unit itselfs bad (have one) but itunes is a terrible user interface with other mp3 players its far simpler to change your library |

i was going to say "use an old phone" option... that exactly what i did with my niece and gave her one of my old iphones.....
that is what i am likely to do with my iphone 5 when i upgrade... take out the sim card and in effect she can use it almost like an ipod touch....
as long as you save all your music on some sort of usb stick... most options will work.... |

I was wondering that. Myself and daughter have apple ipod nano 7. It's great. Can't fault it. Never had a problem. Had it about two years. |

As another apple avoider - I'd agree either use an old mobile with a decent amount of storage, or I have 2 creative players - a zen and a zen nano for my gym armband (its tiny, and small storage but does for my training music) or a sony walkman - I love the walkman best, easy to use (I'm a sony fan, sony laptop, tv, mobile, walkman etc) |

Replace head unit in car with one with a front mounting USB and integrate with stalk controls (if you have them) and get 64GB SanDisk Cruzer Fit (and put MP3s on that).
Typical cost is about £100 for the head unit, plus they have other advantages such as integrated Bluetooth & Mic for full car-kit functionality. |

Or get a head unit with an auxillary port (far cheaper) get an alba mp3 player from argos and a 99p auxillary lead from ebay and your sorted  |

I have stored my music in FLAC format for years, but downgrade it to MP3 for car or bike use, lets face it neither is a sound balanced environment, so the difference is not noticeable. but the file size is. however with cheaper large memory sticks available these days, if you don't go down the route of using an existing device, and are going to spend some cash then I would back up what the Prof said, get yourself a head unit that supports either SD card or USB stick as an input. Then you could use any supported format of which FLAC is probably the best compromise short of having the band in the boot. |
