Hobbies or time fillers?

Jump to: Newest in thread

So been through some bad times recently and had a bit of a slip back into depression come out the other side of it now and trying to keep the "positive" momentum going by actually filling my time with something constructive rather than just sat doing nothing which will just end up with me feeling worse.

Normally the motorbike has been the go to Time filler but with it being winter now and all ways wet/leaves on the road mean fun rides are mostly out.

Tried brewing beer which would be ready tomorrow

Making beef jerky which would be done in a few hours (but not properly ready till morning)

Gonna try making mead next on the brewing side but that'll be like 6 month till its ready. But these don't really take much time.

Have got a load of old electronics gear from when I used to make that might get round to finally building a nixie clock but I'll probably end up zapping myself with the high voltage stuff. (I electrocute myself about once a week at work as it is lol)

Any ideas for projects or things to keep me busy?

What do you guys do when you need a distraction?

Fair play to you for looking for positive avenues to focus on. But if I can suggest all of your activities seem to be indoor, pretty static based. If you've been depressed, can I recommend getting out into the outdoors, nature, the beach, forests, hills. And if your health permits, incorporate some exercise or activity. Ya can't overdose on endorphins, natures drug!

Best of luck to you

My thing is reading...I can get lost in a book. And being outside...even if it's just a walk.

I read. Or write stories (never to see the light of day) about friends and family. I also knit and crotchet sometimes during the long winter evenings.

Seeing as you like bikes, go and get yourself a spares or repairs bike. Then either street fighter it or restore it.

Part of me wants a 748 but fighter in it would require about 9 months hard effort (during which it couldn't ride) redoing the full wiring loom and fluid and vacuum lines to make it look respectable as ducati have a jabbing of dangling everything over the engine if it's a faired bike.

Express yourself artistically.

Overall get fantastic balance into your life. Use your mind, body and soul to express and grow yourself.

Write a list of things you'd love to do, it can be anything for now, this will help slightly stretch your imagination. Make a second list with what you feel you can achieve now, then work towards doing it.

It's a great exercise and one I've employed and tweaked of the years. If done correctly, it's guaranteed to keep you busy for years, good luck. -Mr.

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

As prim and proper as it sounds, I crochet. Great stress reliever. Made a lovely chunky throw for the lounge just inn time for the winter.

Also thinking of getting a rug making kit. Need a new rug for in front of the fire.

Conservation for me. If I'm not making my barracks wildlife friendly down the stables I lend a hand down a local reserve once a month.

The rest is rugby. Training and gym work takes up most time.

Have to stay positive mate. There's solace in the smallest things.

I like that idea! I love the model ships in the Greenwich Maritime Museum. My wife says I'm a boring git. Now the Design Museum is free.....

I knew a bloke bought a 916 ( when they were first realeased), damaged and rebuilt it. He saved a fortune and he made it a one off by doing it his way.

Ducati's are gorgeous but making them into a good looking naked takes a lot of effort and fore thought cheaply streetfightered Ducati's look awful due to the messy wiring hoses and trellis frame.

Still a couple of custom moulded carbon or fiber glass infill panels radiator side shrouds and some clever remaking of the loom.

Looking into it redoing the wiring with a controller box is a good solution. With bikes the switch gear on the handle bars takes the full load hence the big be a ffs wires and is direct between the battery an the component. If you use a controller you can run very small gauge wires taking only a little 5v digital control signal and also use more discrete buttons instead of heavy bar bases switches. With multiplexing and other little tools you can then run all the switch gear for indicators horn lights etc down a single small wire to the controller and the wires from the switches actually inside the handle bars so they'd look completly cable free (have them come put under the top yoke an if it's got a central ram air duct can run them through that then out the air box back to the main wiring/ecu.

Did have an idea for braiding over the cables with tight megamide and then making a custom carbon fibre tank and actually I'm bedding the wires I to the tank so they made a pattern running over the top and around the petrol cap port. And just have a connector at the front of the tank and the rear underside exiting under the seat.

Yeah I've had way too much time to think about bikes lom

If you enjoy sketching why not try putting something together with a bit of writing, I find it pretty cathartic when I'm low and it's a pretty good outlet.

bread making? Sounds daft but it can be a lengthy process if done by hand and the physical action of kneading can be therapeutic. The bonus is the smell of baking bread and then the eating of it .

I sing, crochet, write, sew, read, walk, photograph and generally do loads of stuff that isn't time filling but pleasant living

Why not do some volunteering? It's a great feeling.

Lots of national and local charities need reliable people to help make a difference.
