Tickets went on sale today for Neil Diamond at the O2.

It's my day off so I set the alarm to get up early and treat Mrs P to a nice surprise.

Well he can fuck right off. £321 a ticket. But you do get his new album thrown in for that. What a cheeky so & so, I'd want him playing in my front room for for that.

£85 tickets are available but they are in the gods.

Does anyone know of any tribute acts I could treat Mrs P to and do you think she'll know the difference ?

Ive liked him since I was about 12. Ive never had a bad word to say about it.

For someone singing the same ol stuff, coming towards the end of his career I think he's going to fuck a lot of his fans off big time.

I cant see it being the venue or his management company doing this alone, is he thinking 'one last tour, go out with a bang, make a couple of million (more) and stick my feet up call it a day'?

It smells very much of this. He has a new album out to coincide with the tour, I'm reluctant to buy that now though.

"Silly money. I declined to go to see McIntyre because he was over £40, but crikey, Diamond is in another league "

I used to think a lot of shows were excessive, until I started working on them and got to see the amount of time and money it takes to organise them, the amount of crew needed to build the stage set up, run it and take it down at the end (often around 50 for a smaller show and up to 400 for something like Pink/Beyonce/Timberlake).

The investment in the stage kit is massive too- giant video wall is in excess of £1m to buy, 70K barco projector so the people at the back can see the artist is £50k+ (then you'll send out one of those for each side and a spare- plus 2 screens)- then you'll also need at least 2 cameras and a video village....another £200k+

A PA system for an arena size event is the best part of £250k+ and the lighting used for most large shows would cost you anywhere between £100k and £750K to buy......all this kit needs to be hired in and all of it needs technicians to organise it and check its in working order at the warehouse, road crew to operate it during the show, riggers to put it up and down (all of who need to be trained to a certain level for legal and H&S reasons), trucks and drivers to shift it and tour busses and drivers to shift the tour crew. All these people also need to be fed while on tour, as theres little time to stop between your usual 7am load in and the 4pm soundcheck- thats how long it can take to get things ready (and sometimes load in can be 5am with a 5.30pm soundcheck)

Then there's security, stewards and venue staff, plus the huge costs of running the venues and the investment needed to keep up with the demands of the show designers who are equally trying to keep up with the demands of the audience who constantly want bigger/better/new.

Everybody involved needs to make a living or a profit and although theres a degree of economy of scale when you have x thousand tickets at £x, but the work and the cost involved in just getting the stage setup and the venue safe is way more than most people realise- your £40 doesn't go straight into the artists pocket

I'm sure it costs a lot for equipment & staff etc to put on such shows but u gotta think of the normal working person like myself who cannot afford that type of money not just for the ticket but to travel down to places like London. It's a rich/ poor discrimination in my eyes as only the very well off can afford these such events for legends like Neil Diamond,The Stones, Led Zeppelin etc as they very, very rare come to the North east.
