I was under the impression that sick leave was there for when you were actually sick? And not because you just fancied a day off?

Neither of us take sick days if we can help it, Luke's gone to work this morning with raging tooth ache!

Why? Because we are both hard workers, and if he didn't go in he would be letting his work colleagues down!!

It's only a tooth ache which he has taken pain killers for!

And sick leave is for when you're sick, not for being lazy

I really dont like that 'my sick days are part of my annual leave' attitude. It's a huge problem for UK business compared to other countries we compete with.

Incidentally I had a sick day yesterday. I gave my mate's grandmother ANEL!

Badum tish!

I'm here all week, try the veal.

Oh dear you have to stoop to name calling just because we are not in agreement with you?

Sick days are called sick days for a reason. They are not called lazy days are they?

Just imagine if we all had this thought process, how much money companies would have to pay out for sick leave, the more they pay out the less likely they will make a good profit, which means less likely to get pay rises

I'm self employed so that's not an option. I look after my health so that I don't get sick. I live on energy, good thoughts and a good attitude. People who have a slackness about their work and or environment contribute to a bad working environment. When I've been employed and even now I have a certain pride as if I were running my own business. Enjoy your day off bru

I hate getting up. Especially now it's getting darker. But I know if I don't go in my mucker's going to carry the extra load. Because (funny old thing) the work doesn't go away!!!

Here's an idea. Why not give your job to some poor bastard out there looking for work. Someone who'll actually appreciate being in work and not playing the system for their own means!!

Seeing that I've working at a cinema for nearly 9 years, it would be hard to cope with a broken bone in my wrist as there's ripping tickets, sweeping floors, picking up rubbish and taking bins out.

When I told the managers about it, they said take as much time I need in order to make a full recovery.

Err, yes they would, plenty of people would, the majority wouldn't. But I've known people back in my home town who are just tearing the benefits system a new arsehole, and think it's hilarious. They brag like it's some kind of badge of honour, as though they are the clever ones for getting cash thrown at them for disabilities they don't have.

"Entitled"? You're entitled to it when sick not when you're feeling lazy. Currently 4 people down in an 8 people team due to people being off sick, I was told by my doc to have a few days off last week due to ill health but couldn't bear the idea of letting down the rest of my team. Clearly, I didn't think of my "entitlement" over my work.

I've taken on two members of staff this week, both in their late 40's. One hasn't worked in 10 year's, and the other 20 years (except for the odd day here and there cash in hand, he tells me) So far so good, they seem very happy to have been given a 40 week contract.

I've found that a large majority of companies no longer pay sick pay at all and those that do are vey minimal with it.

I had to leave my job recently as it was making me ill, but I have another to start on 27th October and I cannot wait. Only a nine month contract to cover maternity leave, but I will be grateful for the opportunity to work and will not be taking sick leave unless I am really ill.

I have pride in my work and would not want to let my colleagues down either

Like some on here I get 6 months full pay and 6 months half pay (as one absence) from work.

I don't see that as an entitlement, as I already have a generous A/L entitlement.

The system is designed to be a buffer, to stop people falling on hard times on the event of an injury/illness keeping them off work and not an excuse to feign illness.

OP is trolling well, but that IS an attitude I've encountered from others before.

Same here re sick leave. But it's not an allowance. It's just there for if it's needed and I hope it never is!

Have had a total of 2 days off sick in my 7 years with the same employer, maybe if I was only given an 'entitlement' of 10 days a year or something I might end up thinking differently about what it's for. The OP is obviously trolling but it does make me wonder.

Sounds painful . Hope it's better soon.

I got in yesterday, walking very slowly with my broken toe. I'll be more office based whilst it is mending. I am off today , as we have a team away day and they told me to stay home with my feet up. I wouldn't be much help building a raft etc ! "

I only take time when I am genuinely sick....that's sick to do my work. There has been times in past that I have been well enough to go in but not well enough to do my job, so on that basis I don't go

There is nothing like declaring to all on here you lack honesty an integrity. Do you think after this declaration that you lie to your employers they would believe you if you said you always play safe or are D&D free? We wouldn't and I am betting a lot of others would think again.

A lot of companies now will not pay sick pay for the first 3days of sick leave or alternatively pay the minimum amount of ssp for sick days.

All due to the abuse of sick days as outlined by the op.

End result those who are genuinely ill face real hardship.

Obviously a sad indictment of the system when the OP feels he can just take a day off sick cos he feels like it (even though he's confessed it was a joke, or he's just been brow beaten into the confession by weight of opinion)

But isn't it also an indictment of the system that a lot of the posts are from people who through guilt or losing pay feel they can't take a sick day unless they are clinically dead?

Some of the responses on this thread have really surprised me, especially the "I've worked all my life and never been off sick". You'll all die within 48 hours of retirement, and will have missed some of life's wonders. A "sicky" day is an adventure day - everyone should do it a few times

Neither of us take sick days if we can help it, Luke's gone to work this morning with raging tooth ache!

"

Why has he?

Hope he's not in a job in which is attention is needed for safety as being distracted by strong pain or a sudden pain causing a jump can be very dangerous in some cases.

I he's he's just an office jmtype though then yeah tooth ache isn't an excuse for a sick day

Yes but you won't be infecting every one else at home.

You go "fuck it I don't care I'm going in despite being ill"

The 20 people you worth with get sick and take sick days.

Well done you

Hate people who come in sick if one fucker comes in with something contagious due to confined spaces and all sharing the same small amount of air and lots of surfaces being touched everyone on the team catches it very fast.
