We went to see him last night and he was pretty funny. He is the comedian of Iranian descent.

A lot of his material include jokes about Nigerians, Jews, Arabs and the Middle East in general, and even threw in a 'Paki' joke- his words, not mine

I don't find these kind of jokes funny. I just thought if it was a white guy saying this, there would be uproar.

My question is, does coming from the region give someone the right to do this sort of material?

If it's wrong it's wrong wherever you come from......isn't it? I struggle with this one myself, what about disabled comedians who tell "spastic" jokes? It all makes me feel a bit uncomfortable.

Russell Peters has made a great living out of it.

Jewish comedians doing Jewish jokes

Black comedians doing n word joke's

Women doing jokes about childberth

Eddie izzard doing cross dressing jokes

Should I carry on?

Comedy isn't about ticking boxes on a political correctness form!

It's about making people laugh!

I've not seen much of his material, so can't judge his set.

Pat Monahan is Irish-Iranian descent and does a great routine about spending most of 1980's family holidays being searched in customs.

I think poking fun at a group you are part of is ok, as long as it isn't nasty. The same as anyone else, doing it. You just have more insight into it.

If it's done without malice in a satirical way. . . It tends to not offend the majority. It also helps if you show that the section of society you belong to is also equally open to micky taking . People who look for things to offend them will always find something . Google steve hughes 'get offended' it's pure genius . Jokes tend to poke fun at the human condition. I'd say many a fight has been stopped with humour . Far many more that have been started by it .

If its funny it's funny... doesn't matter of its a racist , sexist or homophobic joke... The joke is always on the generalisation and the sterotype we all see or are led to see by media or history. Like someone dying isn't fun lay. . But the texts soon roll in and I laugh. . The only no gos for me are jokes about the big c

It's only racist, sexist, offensive etc if the joke is coming from a white, heterosexual, Christian male.

If you happen to be anything else then you have a free pass.

There is more than a grain of truth in that.

He is very funny lol! I do think it all depends on the particular personality of the comedian too. They have to be affable. As long as there is no malicious intent there, (to pit one group against another, for example) that it's purely observational etc, it's funny

The silly thing is the majority of the minority like the jokes and it's the pc brigade who get offended for them

Sadly this is also true. Look at the Jeremy Clarkson 'slope' comment. How many Vietnamese people complained? I'm betting it was less than 10 and quite possibly zero. It was most likely a gang of what Jezza likes to call 'saggy breasted sandle enthusiasts'.

I take great offence at that

I wore sandals when I was 10, and I lost weight when I began to get concerned about my moobs starting to sag.

Shame on you sir

I don't think region of birth/religion/colour of skin gives people the automatic right to tell specific jokes and you will always get people who are offended so its a no win on this its more to do with the nature and if the joke demeans a specific group that is the issue.

I can imagine he's a really nice fella. Most of his act is very funny and overall I enjoyed it.

I didnt find the racist stuff funny. The 'paki' joke was a throw back to the 70s.

Arse End of the Universe, Cumbria

He was in Arse End for the the second time 2 weeks ago (yep, an Iranian in a white Northern inbred enclave) and he mentioned that he'd seen a big police presence in the town (think there'd been a bit of a kick off at the local prison)...I couldn't resist, I commented that they'd had intel that there was a middle easterner in the area...have to say, it got a good laugh from all, including Omid and he complimented me on it when I was chatting to him afterwards

No, it's John Thompson from the Fast Show and the way he subverts the old racist, homophobic and sexist jokes is sublime.

Ref Steve Hughes, he is a really talented guy.

I seen him live i thought he was quite funny, even though he took the piss out of me (i was sat in the front row).

If people get easily offended why go see a love comedian, nearly all comedians have some jokes that are borderline which they will use!!

I love the fact that people like Omid Djalili & Russell Peters make jokes about Asians like myself

For many years comedians from the Black Community have made it to top by making jokes about black people, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Dave Chapple, Lenny Henry & so on

It's just a joke at the end of the day!!
