If you aren't watching you have missed one of the most incredible acts of thuggery seen on a sports field. An altercation ended with Ben Flowers knocking out an opponent in the 1st 2 minutes followed by a second punch while the opponent was prostrate on the floor. He will be lucky to avoid a criminal charge.

No place for this kind of behaviour in sport

Seriously? It's a man's game! As long as they shake hands at the end, let's get on with it. if you watch the run up to the incident, you can understand the 1st punch.

Fair enough with the first punch, but the second on the guy while he was out cold was atrocious. And as an aside he has cost Wigan the trophy.

I havent seen the incident but because its a "mans game" i wouldnt say that makes it acceptable to go round knocking people out

It's a very physical game. Obviously I'm not condoning the actions of the wigan player, but let's not hang him either.

It is a brilliant sport because of its physicality, but you cannot expect to get away with a cowardly punch on a man on the floor who is already unconcious.

I understand that and I agree, but I don't think he knew he was unconscious at the time. Did you see how the saints guy tried to break his jaw with his elbow prior to the punch?

Yep, saw the elbow and understood the response, but Flowers over stepped the mark and can expect the book to be thrown at him.

Problem with League as opposed to Union is that you tend to see it all in League because of the lack of rucks/mauls.

Union is far worse for it, IME.

I think we all expect fistycuffs and it adds to both codes, but I've never seen a man knocked out and then further assaulted while unconcious before in either code. The 2nd punch was like something you would see on UFC.

Yep, awesome game, and James at the start were pretty good as well! I suspect it will be remembered for one thing though.

Lol, James, I was in the pub and couldn't quite hear the music. Took me a while to recognise who it was.

Just wish I could have gone.

All kinds of crap goes on in union breakdowns....

Physicality and violence are two completely different things

Only one has a place in a game!

Correct, but sadly emotions run high and punches get thrown, it happens (more so in Union than League). I find it all a bit idiotic, especially for Saturday teams like the one I play in. We all have to go to work on Monday morning.....

It is unnecessary, but happens in such a physical sport. As for Flowers, I can't believe he is feeling very proud of himself.

Emotions are not an excuse for violence EVER especially when the purveyors are 'professional' sports men who are looked up to by our youth and are supposed to be exemplary

I hope some of you guys have never seen a State Of Origin game, especially from a decade or more ago, when health & safety was just a bad dream, geez, - you'd have a slip noose around their necks!!

Okay, I actually saw this for the first time yesterday & I don't see how this Flower guy knew that he was knocked out, as the op suggests???

But no doubt that the second punch was an act of cowardice, that's for sure!

In the first few minutes of a grand final, this was a pathetic & disastrous act to perform for your teams sake, - what an idiot!!

If it were upto me, he'd get a jail term.

How Grievous does Grievous have to be?

Do you not think they hit each other 'cos that's the explicit rules? The very objective of their sport.

Fisticuffs has always been a part of rugby, both codes - but studs deliberately raked down your face whilst pinned down in a ruck is far worse IMO

Is that fair???????????

The first punch was no worse than the elbow IMHO, so, he got an extra 10 match ban for the second, then.

Maybe it'll teach him???????

Half of me says it was deserved & the other half doesn't! Confused.com

I think it is an appropriate ban and that the Wigan statement was brilliant. It seems like post event everyone has handled this in the right way, from Lance Hohaia, to Ben Flowers to the RFL. Case closed, moved on.

Lance Hohaia took it exactly as I thought he would, tbh - but there's still talk of the cops getting involved; if that's the case, why didn't they arrest him there & then?

Bandwagons & jumping comes to mind.
