"Personally I don't think he's in the same class as either Charlton, Greaves or Lineker and hope he doesn't get the record. "
You're entitled to your opinion mate.
All players are better once they've retired. Some truly deserve their allocades over time.
Rooney is disliked because he plays for Man Utd and it's fashionable to hat all things attached to the club.
Time will tell how good he is, but you can still dislike him if you want to.

If I'm not mistaken Bobby Charlton also played for untitled so that blows that little theory out of the water. Charlton is a legend and up there with the likes of Pele and Bobby Moore. They didn't play all the throw away friendlies back in their day either. With only 1 World Cup goal to his name, and a sending off, I think it'd be a travesty if Rooney got the record. He's completely overrated. |

Well said.
Chances are, with the strength of this "qualifying" group, Rooney may well break the record in this campaign.

Rooney doesn't arrange the friendlies and neither does he pick himself.
The England team has been shite for years, even before Rooney started playing. Why don't people have a go at Gerrard, Lampard or the others of the "golden generation"
Bobby Charlton was a true world great, so was Jimmy Greaves and Gary Lineker too.
Rooney will be remembered along with them.

I never understand the "he isn't very good because he hasn't won a World Cup winners medal". Very few do.
Messi, Ronaldo C. and certainly Rooney most likely never will. |

We should entice Ronaldo C. back over here to play for England. Wasn't he resident for some 6 years?
He'd still have time to beat it, and Sir Bobby would likely be pleased. |

Rooney has passion but not enough to cover for the lack of passion in the other players, yes he is over rated the apparent "last of the street footballers" and he is often over hyped but he is one of the better ones of a bad lot.
English football is in a bad way how bad? The F.A. are considering moving England games away from Wembley because they can't fill the stadium and debts have to be paid.
England football games will be replaced with more American football.
Though I do think Rooney is over rated you can't blame one person for the state of our national team. Record or not it won't make a jot of difference. |

Rooney was quoted this week saying "if we play like we're playing in training there's not a team in the world that will live with us". All I can say to that is thank fuck we was only playing San Marino lol. There's not 1 world class player in the England squad. |

Being a Red I back Rooney, his work rate for the team is tremendous but to be honest I feel he's being played in the wrong position these days.
I feel he'd be better suited to the Scholes position now. His passing range and vision to set other players up it better than any of the current England midfield as well as holding up the ball. |

Somethings wrong with the England team - they just don't promote youth players enough like Germany do.
If you guys can crack that - you could be world beaters again... ...and then you could talk about 2018 instead of 1966... |

Sadly, the current generation of England players are just not good enough. They may have their moments, but in the end they fall short of being truly competitive.
Also, probably not helped with a bizarre set up....I mean, really? A holding midfielder against San Marino?
In this group, ten wins out of ten without a goal conceded is not out of the question. But that says more about the opposing teams than ourselves. Another qualifying group to build us up, only to fail in the meaningful event.

Stuart Pearce spoke some good stuff recently, why rush talented youngsters through to 1st team ? Stirling tonight did ok but surely he'd have been better used to help the U21's qualify for last 8 at euros next summer ? If the national team want to progress we should "in my humble opinion" keep lads together working through the age groups, I firmly believe that team spirit and mates playing together is worth an extra player on pitch. Also why does the FA try and start everything at ground root level when these younger player go out and copy their heros ? Stop the proffesionals f'ing and blinding at refs and show some respect to people and maybe we could then expect the youngsters to do the same and while I'm having a rant wtf has happened to a bit of FairPlay and sportsmanship ???? Sorry gone off on one !!! |

All players are better once they've retired. Some truly deserve their allocades over time.
Rooney is disliked because he plays for Man Utd and it's fashionable to hat all things attached to the club.

Wayne rooneys name doesnt deserve to be in the same sentence as the likes of linekar and bobby charlton, but somehow hes managed to score enough goals in these "friendlies" to put him on course for a record.
wayne rooney is a case of a boy whose talent got wasted, when he burst onto the scene at everton he promised so much, and normally there wouldnt have been a better man than alex ferguson to nurture that raw talent, but in this case it was the wrong move for all concerned, he has never fulfilled that promise or evencome close to it for club or country, and he has just been on a slow gradual decline. |

If he slipped in the shower and broke his leg and never kicked a ball again I'd be quite happy. That's how much I think of Rooney lol. |

Considering you don't actually know him! that's not a nice thing to say about another person, He gets picked to play by the managers of the teams he plays for, And like it or not they know a lot more about football then you and other people who are posting on this thread |

Maybe that was a bit harsh. I still don't think he's in the same class as the current record holder. |

Goal scoring records are just stats, after all, it's supposed to be a team sport, isn't it???
I doubt if anyone can deny that Rooney is a team player, - he always works his socks off for club or country! |

"Personally I don't think he's in the same class as either Charlton, Greaves or Lineker and hope he doesn't get the record. "
Too bad he is going to break the record, so you better get used to it
I think Rooney is a better all round player than Lineker was. Lineker was a great goal scorer, Rooney also scores some great goals.

If Rooney beats the record he still won't be ever classed as an England legend and that's not because he plays for man utd its simply because he's not a legend |

"1-0
Scorer...Rooney of course.
Has now scored more goals in European competition than ANY OTHER English player."
I would certainly hope so... he's a striker and only the 9th player to get 100 caps |
