Opt out Donor Scheme

Read in the paper this week that the Welsh are to introduce an "Opt Out Donor Scheme" to combat human organ shortage.

Personally I'm in favour of such a scheme, but I suspect it wont get approved

So if you go "over the bridge" into Wales, have an unfortunate accident, you might not "completely" come back

Yep i personally think it should be opt out too

I have a donor card and they can have what they want when I'm gone

But i personally could not ever accept an organ myself xx

I'm with you on that, the thought of it knocks me sick, really don't think I could do it.

Opt out is a good thing I believe, but I imaging it wont get passed.

This is fascinating, Ive never thought about people not wanting to accept a donor.. Ive been registered as an organ donor for ages but never considered how Id feel if it was me that needed a donor.

I recon if I was ill enough to be at the top of a donor list I wouldnt mind...yeap I will still take one

What makes you both screamish about it? Im intreagued.

They can have what they want from me, after all, as an aethiest i think once your dead you are just meat, however....

God help any doctor who comes to me and asks to chop up my wife or kids after they die, he better hope we are on the ground floor cos he will be leaving through a window!

I know, transplants save loads of lives, but I just couldnt let them take bits from my loved ones.

I'm definitely with you on this, just thinking about it makes me queasy.

I imagine some would think it selfish to not try to prolong my life in this way, but I wouldn't be the same person if I did, so I think I'd be doing them all a favour.

I understand what you're saying, but if my loved one wanted parts taking from them to help save others I would accept it.

I too have been a card carrying donor for all my adult life, as are my two older children, however I would not accept an organ. I have also expressed a wish not to be resuscitated either. When my time comes I'm ready to go.

A friend of mine needed a heart and lung transplant to have any chance of "a normal" life. He had a couple of opportunities to have the surgery but declined, and let someone else have it. No one knows why he refused surgery. He died in 1993, just after his 21st birthday.

There must be thousands of people who would not want to receive a donated organ, and we should respect their wishes.

Is there a seperate "list" for these people? Never heard of one myself

There is a way, I'm not sure how, a bracelet or something to let medical staff know, but there are many people for religious reasons wont accept a transplant.

There's a swinging joke there somewhere but as it's a serious thread , a serious comment from me

I remember feeling the same way as you when Christian Barnard performed the first heart transplant. The growing of human tissue on the back of rodents makes me feel ill at ease too. If it's in any way related I can't watch plastic surgery progs either.

I am perfectly at ease with donors and beneficiaries.

I do not sit well with the opt out scheme. Surely my body is mine unless I say otherwise.

It may seem inoccuous and helpful at the moment and I dare say people will try to pull on your conscience and make you feel guilty if you don't want to give but I have always thought that being heard is crucial. To not voice an opinion is heinous.

I do NOT want an opt out scheme. If people care enough let them opt IN.

The state already has too much sway over human life. So much so that you can get lung illnesses performing work unfit for humans and then the unseen machine can work away to make others feel so guilty about it that they will even give the state total rights over their whole existence. The Matrix existed long before the film and still operates.

I know I would die without any complaints if I thought my death would save my grandchildren or my children but anyone else .... NO

I would give persmission for parts of me to be given to others after my death but I would opt IN and say that it must be to save life. Yet I'd expect that to be interpreted to the nth degree. Is not melting me down for fat for fuel in some way saving lives? Are people okay about that ? Or using my bones to fertilize plants ? My skin to provide clothing , my flesh for animal food ?

Do people only go for the romantic notion that their organ goes inside anothers body amd the rest would be disposed of respectfully ?

If you don't care about your disposal after death - does it matter to your living relatives ? Do you give them a say?

In the long run and opt out scheme cheapens the human body. How many decades or centuries before human life itself is openly taken. It's not valued today and never has been but it has been beneficial to the powers that be to maintain a sentimental populace who imagine they believe in life, loyalty and commitement etc. Sentiment suits those in power. It's an opium. A control; a manipulator.

An opt OUT scheme is a step in the wrong direction.

I have about three or four operations a year.

for the first few, I keep getting asked if I would give any organs to other poeple etc.

person who asked everytime was aethiest, after a while he stopped asking. Which i said hay a for the first four operations you ask me about given organs away, know you do not ask. He joked no point, nothing worth taking.

talking later he said once you had cancer you can't donate, which he said was totally nuts. If you take person "A" has three months to leave, the is a match but the organ from a cancer background.

80% chance the cancer will not be in the organ why not give it to the person with only three months to live at least they get a longer time.

I would take the option of a longer time even if it had cancer in the organ, at least I would see people I love longer.

What everyone else think.

I have been on the organ donar list for years and always take the opportunity to re-join as I have never felt that the administration of the scheme to be particularly good.

It's difficult to say whether I would accept an organ from someone else. I can sit her and say that no I wouldnt - for all the reasons stated above or I could sit here and say yes - essentially I have no issue with it however if I was in the unfortunate position of being so ill that I need a transplant then I cannot say what my true reaction would be.

I do believe that when your time is up, it's up. Again though, if a lorry was hurtling towards me out of control I'd be trying to get out of it's path.

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

I would love to be able to be a donor, but sadly the medication I have to take after my heart by-pass prevents me from even donating blood As for receiving a donated item, if I knew the benefits would outway any problems then I`m up for it. After all, if someone has paid the ultimate sacrifice, their life, and given someone else the chance to improve their outlook then it seems rude not to accept the ultimate gift - life.

a Primark shoebox in Leicester

Years ago I registered to donate my body to the University for medical studies... not for transplants.

I always thought an opt out system would be much better than an opt in... until I watched something on the telly. There were people who had received bits and bobs from dead folk... and they referred to them as gifts, they knew without doubt the person carrying the card wanted to give that gift. They explained how they thought they would feel if they had aquired their new body bit without that knowledge.

It was the 'gift' bit that got me thinking.

It is my body and I know I won't be needing it when I am dead.... but I should be able to choose what happens to it. It is your body and you should be able to choose what happens to yours.

If you want to make a gift of bits of it or even all of it... it is yours to make that choice and give that gift. It is not for anyone else to decide... nor to make you state what you DON'T want to do.

One of the biggest arguements for changing from the opt in system is.... not enough people bother or they never get around to doing it... what makes them think the same arguement won't apply with people opting out? People who mean to opt out but didn't get around to it. It removes the certainty of the 'gift'.

I would prefer not to see an opt out system introduced.

Do they think that people will be more inclined to opt out and not forget to do it or never get around to do it than the other way around?

I imagine there must be statistics of how many gifts come from people who never registered but who in their final days either declared their will to donate or whose family agreed to it after their passing.

Thats why an opt out scheme is good. If your partner already opted out then no problem if he or she had not then still no decision for you to make at a bad time. Kids thats a different matter.
