Okay this maybe a stupid question but....

I've defrosted some steak in the fridge overnight, 2 pieces are a normal pinky/ red colour the other bigger piece has a lot of darker almost brown patches on it. Looks a lot deader than the other 2.

There's no funny smell but is it okay to use ~ I don't eat meat but don't really want to poison the kids...?!

Its just oxidation so it will be fine unless it smells, looks slimey or just 'off'

Might have freezer burn too. Chicken is particularly probe to that.

Yeah it should fine to eat you should have no problems with it. I use meat like that all the time. Enjoy.

it happens frequently with packaged red meat. It should be perfectly ok.

Packaged meat usually has dyes added to it to make it look red, fresh and appealing. The dye tends to change colour after being in the air for a while.

Meat from the butchers looks darker meat as it's not been prepared with the dye.

Buy from the butcher. Steak should be brownish. It's been hung longer and is more tender.
