For an efficient method if you must do it yourself, plasterboard over the walls and decorate that, as per my tiling advice you need to judge when to move out before the house gets too small |

Seriously, they make the job a whole lot easier.
I was quite lucky when I moved into my home, that I was able to borrow my brothers steamer - only to discover, once I'd stripped half the walls, that a previous resident had left one behind in the loft |

Soap and hot water. I work for a painter, steamer will only get you so far. Soap and hot water, (and some patience, its a crap job), are all you need. Good luck |
