There are two that particularly intrigue me :-

The Mary Celeste: When the ship was discovered, the only lifeboat was missing and there was a six month supply of food and water, but not a single soul on board. What happened to the ten people aboard.

And Lord Lucan, did he drown in the sea or was it some devious plan to make others believe he had died?

I have a friend who is majorly into conspiracy theories - he does make me think on occasion.

On a more serious note - in this day and age of technology, how can a 290 ton plane with 239 people on it vanish into thin air?

Well they would have to be hairy for one, and from what I see yours don't fall into this category. Although it could explain why there are no bare foot pics on your profile

Tony Blackburn. . How has such a wet blanket with zero charisma achieved such legendary broadcasting status ? On the pint glass full of ice thing . . That's because all the gaps between the nice cubes are enough to allow the melted ice to fit the glass . Fill a pint glass half full of water . Freeze it then see how much higher the thawed ice will be up the glass .

I saw a doc a few years ago that concluded that the Mary Celeste was carrying a flammable cargo, and fearing a fire on board the captain opened all cargo hold doors and ordered the crew into the life boat which was tethered to ship til it was safe to return. The rope broke, the ship sailed on leaving the crew in the middle of nowhere in a tiny boat.

Sounds plausible

This has been put forward as a plausible explanation, ship was carrying ethanol which burns at low temperature, therefore no burn marks

Some of the ice is above sea level. When it starts to fall into the sea it displaces water. Eureka! If anyone would like to correct me feel free. It was just a theory my tired brain told me was correct

Titz Towers, North Notts

There are very few genuine unsolved mysteries. There are books and websites aplenty offering fairly convincing explanations for most of the classic mysteries.

Some that do interest me are the events on Eilean Mor, the Franklin Expedition, Roanoke and Tunguska. All will have natural explanations.

Princess Diana was killed by a d*unk driver driving too fast. Hope that cleared that one up.

9/11 isn't a mystery. A lot of conspiracy theories are out there but they have all been debunked.

Doesn't water expand when it freezes? Therefore when you melts it takes up less room

Mostly right on the Diana one, you missed the fact that they were travelling fast to shake off the paparazzi so it's in the interest of the media to create conspiracy theories.

9/11 because it was possible and unexpected. But stopped the hijacking possibilities for any other terrorist group ever.

McCann, because predators are out there and the parents set a pattern of leaving unguarded children in an unlocked apartment. Sad but it can be a cruel world.

Spontaneous human combustion is another one. In one of the cases, alcohol and smoking were ruled out. All that was left of the body was a pile of ashes, one of his feet, and his walker. There was a hole in the floor, but very little other damage was caused to the room despite the obvious intensity of the flames. Some things just seem to have no logical explanation .

That one has been done in the lab, at least for the not so spontanious ones. It's all to do with a fire caused by a localised flame then it smoulders slowly and burns bodyfat like a slowly burning candle, a lot of very specific circumstances are needed for it to occur. Very weird though.

"There are many things which intrigue me, the Nasca (sp?) lines in Peru for one, why would ancients clear them when they can only be seen from the sky and how did they mark them out??"

The nasca lines is a strange one, as is who built stonehenge and how did they build it? Roswell ufo incident in new mexico also strange, at first an army officer did an official press release saying it was a ufo crash, then there was a cover up, the army changed the story to say it was a weather balloon. Also saw a programme, where eyewitnesses to the crash or aftermath of the crash evidence said they were threatened by government officials to keep quiet or else. On eyewitness said a couple of truckloads of evidence was removed from the crash site, and don't think you would get truckloads from a weather balloon.

Reply privately, Reply in forum +quote or View forums list

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

Roswell was almost definitely a UFO of American origin, they smuggled a lot of German scientists and engineers out at the end of WW2 and did a lot of experimenting with plane design which sort of lead to the Stealth Bomber we now know about, but to anyone witnessing the crash it would have been a top secret design of a plane they wouldn't recognise as a plane at the time, hence UFO and secrecy.

Another one local to where i live in cannock, there has been sightings of a kid with black eyes on cannock chase forrest (not black eyes as if punched in the face, lol, but a little girl with jet black eyeballs, no pupil or white in the eye, just completely black. These sightings of this girl on cannock chase go back to the 1980's, no fact based evidence to back it up as it is all eyewitness accounts so you either believe it or you don't. Latest sighting was just last week, and the story was in lots of newspapers. I looked the black eyed kids phenomena up online and there are sightings of these kids with black eyes (or BEK's) all over the world. One theory is they could be ghosts or some kind of supernatural beings and other theories suggest they could be human/alien hybrids as they look human but have the black eyes well known from the "grey" type alien with big black eyes and grey skin.

Also on cannock chase there is said to be a big cat known as the chase beast, eyewitnesses say it is a black panther. Other similar stories in other parts of the country such as the beast of bodmin moor.

I too was perplexed by this one. However, if any of the melting ice was originally land bound, then there would indeed be water entering the sea which was not there before.

"The ice caps melting and causing widespread flooding...........................fill a pint glass with ice, then let it melt.......it doesn't overflow."

Sea ice - floating on the ocean, such as the Arctic, won't increase sea level as it melts - which is the phase that we are in now - although sea level is still rising because the sea itself becoming warmer and so expanding.

Once the ice caps that are on land masses start to melt - Antartica and Greenland - then we will see a rapid increase in sea level.

If all the land-based ice caps melt then Britain will be under several hundred feet of water.

Sea level is absolutely guaranteed to rise by 50cm by the end of the century, and is very likely to increase by a further 50cm, although the second figure is dependant upon a sequence of variables.

pretty much this, weird and a little bit strange the very little amount of local fire damage caused as the body consumes itself thus..

I don't know, it's quite a nice story, but then so are the legends of King Arthur. Problem is verifiable claims in the new testament tend to be provable as untrue whilst virtually nothing relevant can be proven to be true.

So I guess you just get left with a nice story many choose to believe, but unfortunately that doesn't make it a fact.

Does your life really flash before your eyes when you are dying.

I can factually state that I saw a bright white light and remembered moments of joy but not my life flash past. I have my own theory that it is our mind making a scary situation easier on us.

Yes I agree with your theory. I was told by my father's sisters (I was a child) that he said he saw butterflies just before he died. It was probably the morphine, but it's nice to think that nice thoughts are there when you pass on.

" On the pint glass full of ice thing . . That's because all the gaps between the nice cubes are enough to allow the melted ice to fit the glass . Fill a pint glass half full of water . Freeze it then see how much higher the thawed ice will be up the glass .

But when it melts again there is still only half a glass of water the level does not rise.

Doesn't water expand when it freezes? Therefore when you melts it takes up less room"

actually i'm wrong . . Someone posted earlier that it's ice caps above the water are breaking off and falling into the sea. . So increasing the volume . .

But as the ice melts and falls into the water isn't the ice cap lighter therefore taking up less volume in the water ?

Ref water and sea level rises - it will rise to varying depths, depending on where you are.

As water warms it also expands, so global warming has a massive amount of water that needs somewhere to go. I can't imagine that even if the grand canyon and death valley were filled that it could hold sufficient volume equivalent to global increased liquid volume and to counter expansion. But no scientific calculations done.

I'm perplexed that after thousands of years we are still finding sexuality a problem.

JFKs assassination.

I don't believe it was one guy.

How the BBC report on a building coming down during the 9/11 attacks, half an hour before it actually came down.

How people still believe what they read in the papers or see on the news.

Just what exactly causes the cow mutilations and why.

That bloke you are talking about is Jesus and God is his father, so I'll rephrase it again so people understand! Jesus is the son of God! That isn't a mystery, it's a fact! "

But surely the weight of the icecap in the water would cause displacement and when a piece breaks off there works be no extra displacement as the weight displacing would be the same albeit in a large and a small piece?.

Oh how funny. I should of stated I've had 2 near death episodes of dying. Once I almost drowned and had to be resuscitated and last year a very bad asthma attack. Both times the same sort of experience happened.

Black&White Utopia

"Spontaneous human combustion is another one.

fuck! I would burn for a week then! Lol ... Always fascinated me the combustion of a human .... Remember seeing pictures at school and why n how never explained ... Yes agree very weird

I saw a program about the assassination of JFK and they summised that a secret service agent in the car behind hit him by accident.

It is quite easy to make marks in the ground line in Peru on a huge scale with simple maths, but the reasoning behind it is unknown.

The Great Pyramid at Ghiza is quite a mystery. Insofar as, when was it built and how? Not by Khufu, I suspect.
