To the woman who's insisting I'm making out that she's catholic despite her being an atheist because of 'free will'...talk about monumentally missing my point.

For example, one is automatically Jewish if one's mother is Jewish. Stephen Fry, who identifies very often with being jewish, is an atheist (and quite an anti-religious one at that). But he's still jewish, because his mother is jewish.

So my point still stands: because Islam, Judaism and Catholicism, unlike all the other religions, don't regard it as possible to leave their faiths, its possible for a person to be 'culturally' muslim, jewish or catholic without believing in any of it.

That's certainly true of me. I may have been bought up muslim and took the shahada, but I certainly don't believe in the vast majority of it. Really, religiously, I'm a deist. I eat pork and don't really go to mosque. But still, culturally, I'm a muslim and damn proud of it.

Or, to again quote Dara o'Brian: "catholicism is the stickiest, most adhesive religion in the world. There's no website where you can de-register. You can't go to your priest and go 'feck ya, I'm out of here. You could join the taliban; and you'd merely be regarded as a bad catholic"

You're probably right, but religion (or lack of it) is so personal. If someone does not wish to consider themselves a member of any religion any more that's their choice. To be honest, Catholicism hasn't covered itself in glory, so some people could choose to leave their church for that reason. Saying to them 'you can't because...' (especially if you're not a member of that church yourself) is not exactly the most tolerant behaviour.

You did state that I could not stop being a Catholic.

But if I choose of my own free will not to be a Catholic as I don't believe that a god no matter whose believes in it exists I am still a Catholic because some people who believe in what I see as a piece of "fiction" state that I am?

So surely you are making out that I am still a Catholic in the eyes of the Catholic church. Which is fine but in my eyes I'm not - the Catholic church could believe I am a two headed, six eye goblin for all I care.

As long as I strive to be the best person I can be for myself and for the rest of humanity I am happy. I may fuck up on the way but I am trying and without any influence of a greater being or the promise of a reward for my good deeds.

But you* are* still a catholic in the eyes of the catholic church-not that that really counts for anything, but I'm pointing out that the catholic church regards anyone baptised as a catholic to still be a catholic regardless of what happens later. That wasn't making any judgement on your personal beliefs or being intolerant towards them. I was just pointing out that catholicism, islam and judaism are unusual in having that attitude.

Like I said earlier, I'm not exactly 'religiously' a muslim myself. In fact, I'm closer to an atheist (though I'm not strictly an atheist) myself.
