Sitting here quietly reading through various forum posts. Does anyone agree that a future requirement of joining the site SHOULD be the ability to write basic English?

Nope people use there phone auto correct takes over and often corrects things without the poster realising I'm a terrible culprit for this but I can assure you that I am well above basic English. This is for recreational use I don't want to use a thesaurus and dictionary before every post

My initial reaction was and emphatic YES!

Good English does matter

But then I thought what would I do if I got a badly written message asking to meet from a lovely Polish or Latvian girl?

Or a girl from India, Russia, or anywhere else for that matter!

No, why should they.

Remember that for some people, English may not be their first language.

Then there's people that suffer dyslexia.

Rather than criticising someone's writing style, concentrate on the essence of the thread instead.

No. Last I heard being able to write without error didn't equate to mind-blowing sex.

It's 'an ability', not 'the ability' - there is no need for the definitive article here.

Oh and run on sentences are annoying.

But, to answer your question, no.

No.

An ability to be genuine is far more important, but we can't test for that...

Spelling mistakes and the proper use of grammar are part and parcel of the forums

Maybe, when people take the time to get things right it shows they actually care about what they are doing. The message itself then becomes something in itself and not a means to an end.

Anything other than the correct use of the English language points to laziness,, or, their lack of understanding of what it is they are trying to convey.

If that came into being should an age limit follow say 65 shortly after? After all we have a minimum age of 18 so why not.

No it doesn't. If someone spells a lot of words wrong and wants to get a point across quickly, constantly spell checking will take a long time.

It matters if it doesn't make sense and someone is expecting people to read and understand and maybe comment on their input but a typo or a spelling mistake makes little difference if its understandable.

I do feel that a good command of the English language is a guide to character and personality.

I noticed your first post (as far as I could see) was grammatically correct and with good punctuation.

Now the beginning of your sentences lack a capitol letter.

Now forgive me if I'm wrong but isn't using a capitol letter at the beginning of sentences, names, places and so on one of the first things they teach us at school, you know "basic English" ?

Anyway, for if you have failed to work it out yet, No we don't agree with your first post because...

... we all make mistakes.

"Sitting here quietly reading through various forum posts. Does anyone agree that blah, blah"

No.

No.

NOOOOOOO!

When I worked as a Civil Engineer, I worked with some amazing people: one who could write only his name, another only knew the English word 'yes'; (which led to some interesting, if confusing, initial discussions!) In neither case did I ever consider myself even as good as they were.

Personally we are not here to judge people on the basis of how fortunate they were with their education, we are simply here to have fun.
