Definitely the Smiths for me, I still play their tunes and love them.
Morrissey is certainly a loner and does not mix well with people, however his eccentricity, individuality, non conformity attitude has produced some amazing music |

Well any band who start a song with the lyric "punctured bicycle on a hillside desolate" must have something about them.
They were a great "band" too - and not just Johnny Marr's guitar playing.
I would go for the Stone Roses though. I love the subtle musicianship in the their songs. Reni is just out of this world - watch him drum and he has music flowing through every ounce of his being. He also doesn't hammer the drums and listens, responds, cajoles others with his playing. He's more like a great jazz drummer in that respect. Good examples are the little, deliberate shifts in tempo of songs like Made of Stone and IATR.
I actually think John Squire is the worst musician in that band - and he's obviously great. Mani is a great, underrated bass player with a strong northern soul influence.
Obviously IB's voice can be an issue live, but he's been ok when I've seen them on the whole.
The one thing that I struggle with is the fanbase - the comeback gigs were great, but there was a definite footie hooligan, piss in pint glass chucking element. Hard to enjoy Fools Gold when two gangs of lads are eyeballing each other right in front of you

The Smiths had a lot going for them. Paving the way in some respects for the Roses. Amazing baselines, clever lyrics and brilliant guitar work.
However, The Roses have a place in my heart, a soundtrack to my youth. Watching the recent Danny Boyle film was great!
"Come with me to a place no eyes have ever seen, a million miles from.here where no one else has been."
Although...if you're into BDSM..."I want you black and blue, gonna bring you down to your knees" |

Good head to head!
Smiths win on studio albums 4 v 2.
Roses win it on best album - The Stone Roses.
Marr just edges Squire on the guitar.
Mozza beats Brown on charisma, humour, lyrics and voice.
I love the Stone Roses - I remember that the first tine I heard Waterfall I had an epiphany.
All that said I think the Smiths are in the top three greatest English bands ever.
Good post OP, you've started a mass debate.

Don't like like the smiffs, not all that keen on the roses but what difference does it make?
If I am going to choose I will say that the stone roses grow on you!
Definitely the stone roses for me |

Think a better comparison would be a spoon and a fork?
They were both very good IMHO...
if you think there shite than they were shite. Does it matter? Or as MG said "what difference does it make"! |

Absolutely no comparison. The Stone Roses are a one album wonder. A bit like Aqua or Fountains Of Wayne. I've no idea how they can be taken seriously. Probably the most over hyped and over rated band in the last thirty years. Absolute garbage. The Smiths however have released many critically acclaimed albums.
I really don't understand the confusion. |

most of the indie bands say they got some of their inspiration from listening to the smiths..... but the stone roses were something else!!
there is one tune that whenever it is put on in the pub jukebox everyone gives you the "nod" of approval.... I am the resurrection |

My 2 all time fave bands but I have to go for The Roses as the first time I heard them in 1989 they gave me Goosebumps and I had never experienced that from a band before. They also made indie kids dance!! |

Loved The Stone Roses debut album and was lucky enough to see them very early on in a pretty tiny venue (Brum Irish Centre) but was so underwhelmed I've never considered seeing them again |

I liked a few of the smiths songs, but many of them are enough to want to shoot oneself in the head. I am not keen on Morrissey personality wise
Stone Roses wins hands down. Love all their music/Lyric and everything about Ian Brown, love his solo tune F.E.A.R too |

"Tough, must be stone Roses. Never seen them love, but seen some good Tribute bands"
As much as I am an uber fan of the roses, the tribute bands were probably better! Saw them live a fair few times but I think they were only decent on 2 occasions. Doesn't stop me loving them though!! |
