Titz Towers, North Notts |
Tonight I've been to see Dave Spikey (Phoenix Nights) and he mentioned that after a Corporate in London he had trouble going from the venue to his hotel, as no one would take him South of the Water after midnight. It was a rule.
Is this a trade practice, or a union rule or just an old tradition? |

"Definitely used to be so, but I am sure they go a little way south. I think the thought was that they would not get a return fare too far out into the wilderness of Sarf Lundon!"
This is the reason ^^^^. It is still the case with the older cabbies. I've picked up people who say they've been refused up to three times. Us younger lot will go almost anywhere though. I have just returned from Dulwich Village, but I'm having a tea to get over the shock. |

Millwall, Crystal Palace, Charlton & Wimbledon are all south of the river, - can you blame them????
.......at least when it comes to Crawley, you can fly in to Gatwick & remain pretty inconspicuous - Ish! |

Im originally from Wandsworth and after a night out, the taxi drivers would use it as an excuse. Maybe they just didnt want 4 pissed up lads in the back of their motor

"Everyone says they live in leafy Dulwich when the reality is next door in Peckham "
This is so true. The amount of times someone will say East Dulwich please mate when in fact I'm dropping them off in camberwell.
I've had Railton Village for Brixton and South Chelsea for Wandsworth.

the gentle hum of the traffic interspersed with the occasional gunshot or burst of automatic..
triffic.. "

I tried parking round the back of the Brixton Ritzy on a Friday night to go blues dancing once - I was eligible for witness protection programmes several times over by the time I got in, never again!

"As my old cab driver mates used to say.
Elephant and Castle , stick it up your arsehole.
I could have put that on the poetry thread as well. "
But that doesn't rhyme? It would have to be:
Elephant and Carsole, stick it up your arsehole.
Or
Elephant and Castle, stick it up your arstle.
Even in a Laaaahndun accent. |

but that's based on it being a proper Londoner, it could have been a taxi driver from one of 87 different countries so that his pronunciation of castle did rhyme with arsehole |

It does rhyme if your a Londoner. The aitche in areshole is not pronounced so it is close to your word arstle but probably more like asrel. And the castle would be carsel, so a good rhyme. |
