most companies will charge late payment fees, £5 is quite reasonable.

if you set up a DD they have to let you know 10 days before your bill date how much they are charging you, its part of your DD guarantee.

My phone bill is rarely the same each month but I still have it on DD. They're supposed to text you with the amount charged before they take the money.

I have all my bills on DD now, else I would certainly be back in debt.

Depends how late you were. I assume you were sent reminders, then £5 is better than being cut off.

If you're on a contract you must never be off it, I find it hard to get anywhere near my limit of minutes.

That is harsh, they can't claim admin, threaten to leave, see if that helps.

I'd be curious as to how reasonable £5 is for their amount of loss and any extra cost incurred.

over a fiver?

why cant they charge admin? they were expecting to have the OP's money at an agreed date and that never happened. that required chasing the OP for the payment which costs them money.

If it is first offence you could ask or a gesture of good will for them to waive the charge.

if you pay by DD they have to by law. Any DD mandate you sign has a disclaimer above where you sign which sets out your rights under the DD Scheme (sadly i used to know this off by heart as i had to say it hundreds of times a week )

not at all...where did that come from?! i didnt say you were wrong or lying or making it up!

i'm just saying what they should do by law. It obviously isnt an issue for you but others might not have been aware of the DD guarantee and what providers under the scheme are obliged to do.

Direct debits are usually for variable amounts vs. standing orders which were for fixed values. As almost all utilities rip off those not doing dd it seems sensible to use it if the cash is reliably available.

I've ways paid Vodafone by DD but they never tell me the amount each month? No text, no bill, no email?

Perhaps they get around the DD laws as it is available for customers to view and check online.

Anyhow... That's bloody annoying for a one off late payment! Hope they back down

Did you not read the 28 pages of small print written in legal gobbledygook in the smallest print known to companies as outlined in volume 4.98 Para5.85 subsection 3.c?

Shame on you. No sympathy whatsoever

Check your contract to make sure they have told you about this if not it is not something you have agreed to and as you have not agreed to it you cant be charged for it. A contract protects both of you not just a company.

I'm with vodaphone (shite signal around the house ) but I do get a text each month telling me how much they are going to take. Maybe it's an "opt in" thing that needs to be signed up for.

They want you to pay by Direct debit (you can have a variable one)so incentivise for doing it and punish those they have to chase up for payment.
