How long does it take to get over the heart break of a child leaving home?? My son left for uni a week ago and I am crying daily. I can't bare it.
I am so proud of him and know that it is the best thing for him, but my selfishness just wants him to come home. I haven't told him this of course and would never ask him to give up his dreams.
I just want to stop feeling so sad about it. I know he will be home at Christmas and then Easter but it doesn't seem to help |

It's good to let them grow up and encourage them to be independent.
You'll get over it when he comes home and treats home like a fully serviced hotel and starts getting on your nerves.
I was talking to some friends going through exactly the same thing and ones that went through it last year.
It's a big change but you will get through it.

My son left home at 16, he told me 6 months in advance and it was a very difficult time but he didn't like living in a quiet little town. After he left it took another three months then I got two kittens |

My children leaving home for uni didn't break my heart, it swelled with pride and love for my fledgling adults leaving the nest.
They are adults now with their own lives, one goes off to Australia in a few months to further his career. I can feel sad for me or be happy for them. As said previously, you take them as far as you can then let them fly and soar ...... they always come back to you anyway. xx |

I was sort of glad when my son was leaving home but I did cry when we helped him move out because I was so worried about him and because he was going to be living a long way from us.
it felt like a berevment.
anyway nothing bad happened to him so I need not of worried, and he has had to move back in with us now anyway. |

Mr Hrnyashellcpl, My daughter has just left for uni n iam gutted, she is my youngest n she has lived with me since she was 5, iam not embarrassed to say I sobbed like a baby but miss her like mad, don't know wen u get used to it |

I think I have to accept it will take a little time. At the moment I can't even bring myself to talk to him on the phone it's too upsetting. It will get better I know. Thank you for all your support. I keep thinking people will tell me I am just being stupid and need to pull myself together. |

He might come back yet, I did 'temporily' 5 years ago 
I hope you can come to terms with it soon and then you can enjoy seeing him spread his wings and live his life.
He flies with his own wings now. |

You will have to put up a strong front, he is the one away from you, his home, his long term friends and in a strange new world wondering if he will settle in, make new pals and deal with his studies.  .

Exactly. These first two terms are crucial to making a success of the transition and doing well at Uni. Everything has changed and home is the place of safety to run to if it gets too much.
