Breast feeding
Jump to: Newest in thread
If I'd been able to do it I would of done so for around 6 months.
I know someone who's girl is just coming up for 3 and she just goes up to her lifts her top and gets her boob out herself and has a drink. I now it's natural etc but to me that's just not right.
However it's up to them what they do so that's fair enough. I just wouldnt feel comfortable with that. |

As long as you and your child are comfortable doing it. Breast feeding is a non-sexual firm of physical bonding for mum and child, but also a personal choice.
Longest I did it for was 4 months, once they start teething I didnt enjoy it any more. |

I bottle fed all mine so cant really comment but i would personally say once a child can walk and talk it would seem a little unusual. Then again in some countries it is the norm until age 4 or even older. I suppose it depends on each child really |

I loved it and did it for a year with my first but only 5 months with my second
For me each one was very different so it will depend on both of you and what feels like the right time to stop |

I suppose there is no right answer but my youngest is just 2. I never planned on bf this long. It's just I had a comment from a friend saying it's about time I stopped as it's not socially acceptable.
I only feed at home, not because I won't in public, just that I don't need to as its
only around bedtime and nap time.

Many years ago, I was in my early 20's at the time, I knew a mother who was still breastfeeding a 5 AND 6 year-old... in public.
To be honest, I didn't really have any opinions about it one way or the other but there was one aspect of it that I did find uncomfortable at first.
Thing is, the kids had learned that agitating the breast prior to a feed brought the milk on for an easy feed.
From an ignorant observer point of view it 'looked like' these two kids were punching their mum in the tits and were allowed to get away with it!
Anyway, after agitating they would stick their heads up her jumper and get on with it... in the pub on a Sunday lunchtime!
Apart from misunderstanding the 'tit punching' part I don't think anyone, including me took any notice. That said, at a party one night, having had a few, she ended up topless and so the 'spouts' were on full view. Yes, I meant to say 'spouts' not nipples. They looked more like a small flaccid penis than nipple and anything but attractive.

there's no right or wrong time hun, whatever feels right for you.
you're little ones feeding for comfort before bed & naps tho & probably not for nutrition so you might find that a hard routine to change when you want them to settle themselves to sleep. x

Well done on doing it for so long actually. If you're both happy to continue and enjoying that bonding time then continue to do it. Yeah it's not usual but it doesn't mean it's wrong. Wouldn't bother me to see any parent feeding an older child this way, your kids, your life, your choice. |

I personally think 12 months maximum. By this time it's not needed and they should be on cows milk. They should also be drinking out of a cup not a bottle. I got my son on a cup when he was weaning at 6 months old and a bottle and bed ring only until he was a year.
Both tits and teats are not good for their teeth development |

I made that mistake in the beginning of feeding to sleep.. I make sure she's awake when I put her in her cot.
I am ready to stop.. I will have to make her go cold turkey soon haha |

because in this country their are substitutes, though there is no reason to carry on feeding your child after 12 months that does not mean you have to swap them onto something else, that's a personal choice |

There is no actual guideline and as long as mum and child are comfortable. I fed most of mine over a year...
It was such an amazing experience. I've seen two years olds still feed but with children starting nursery so early now is imagine it would stop about then. |

The thing is that women will be criticised whatever they do. If you breast feed too long its wrong, not long enough...guess what wrong. Acceptance and support of every mother's choice in child rearing whether you agree with it or not (as long as its safe) is the way forward and realise that although your way is best for you it might not be for someone else.

I don't have problems with bottles or dummy's, anymore than I do bf... I just meant why is ok for a toddler to have a bottle but not to bf.
I know how hard it is and sometimes parents will do anything to keep their kids asleep |

its just the way society is at the moment. I find it amusing that people have no problem with seeing breasts in their sexual role but struggle with them in their nurturing role. |

Our two oldest only 4 months.
The youngest one I breast fed until he was 18 months
Two older ones did not want to breast feed anymore when I introduced them to the bottle.
Youngest one hated the bottles. And he is the only one of our kids that doesn't have allergies or asthma. I do think the breast feeding is the reason. |

Bf until u feel the time is right to stop. I hate all the judgementals regarding bf. it's a natural thing. Hate when people pass comment when they see it in public.
Obviously it has to stop at a certain age but every baby is different.
Just go with the flow (excuse the pun) |

Dummies too!
You can tell when they've had a dummy for too long, their teeth are slanted and look like a rabbit |

Seems to be a lot of confusion about bf.. Maybe that is why this country is so hung up about it?
Baby's/ toddlers that bf still eat food.
There are many health reasons to continue to bf, to both mother and child not just nutritional value.
I'm grateful for all the responses and shows a mixture of opinions.
I think I'll carry on till my daughter or I get fed up. |

Mrs P had an awful time when ours started to produce teeth. It became terribly painful for her and was one of the reasons why she decided to stop. Both of our were terrible biters. |

I couldn't breastfeed my oldest as I was completely dry for 3 days after she was born and she was in intensive care. When I could feed her she just wasn't interested. I felt really guilty. My second I only managed 2 weeks as she was born with teeth and and after feeding she would have a good chew. I started bleeding and it was vey painful. I was planning on 4 to 6 months. I do think they should be off the breast before 2 but still fed breast milk as long as it can be expressed.
I really don't get why we don't continue drinking human milk instead of moving onto cows milk. |

Never feel guilty about not being able to bf.. At the end of the day all that matters is that the child is fed!
Why is expressing milk ok and bf not?
And humans drink human milk as we are not cows! Cows milk is designed for cows and human milk Taylor made for growing baby's! There are many health reasons to have breast milk that doesn't happen giving cows milk. |

Speaking as a woman who ensures that she always changes her apron, refreshes her lipstick and ensures that the children are locked bound and gagged in the cupboard under the stairs before the man of the house returns from a hard day at the office. I am positive that he will never stray |

My daughter wasn't breastfed. She was and still is perfectly healthy. And has the constitution of an ox. She's rarely ill and was never really ill as a child. She had mumps but recovered very quickly. German measles but that didn't even slow her down.
She was the tallest in her class and is now 5'11".
I never felt guilty about not breastfeeding. |
